You must be Mexican and yeah he was a C level fighter just 14 defenses At 147 ,five time world champion anyone who stood up and fought tito toe to toe did not see the 12 round that's a fact.
He was 28 years old when he had his hand-wrapping technique exposed and permanently altered. He never beat a good fighter after that. He lost a very one-sided bout to Hopkins and was shut out by Winky He is definitely, IMO, overrated. He was a very good WW and JMW, but a great in two divisions only.
He's overrated AND underrated depending on who you listen to..... I hear a lot of people talk about how much they miss Tito.... He wouldn't have beat Hearns, Leonard, or Robinson, but at 147lbs, Tito was a real predator, very patient deadly power, my favorite of the past 20 years, along with Pacquaio and Morales. When he beat Joppy to go 40-0, I thought I was watching a young Duran, but Hopkins exposed, him nonetheless.... He kinda pissed me off retiring after EVERY loss thoughatsch
It was great watching Tito perform when he was on top nothing but respect for the guy but i think we all know he lost to DLH. I don't think he was overrated he was exciting and had the full support of his people. Some might say he was a tad limited though he could be outboxed but if you came to trade punches with Trinidad in his prime it was safe to say you where going down.
The despicable tactic on Vargas, the questionable handwraps, and the fact the judges gave 'eem the BS nod on Oscar, are enough for me to dislike the guy.
It's not that they forgot it's just called selective memory. Exactly, everyone is overrated by their fans and underrated by their haters. He did beat Mayorga who was a world class fighter at that time, meaning he was a good fighter and Tito did knock him out so it's safe to say the handwrap theories were very much exagerrated. Winky was simply a bad style matchup for him.
Even with the handwrap scandal, the strategically placed low blows, the Hoya gift...He is one of reasons why I got into boxing. He is an easy fighter to digest for the new or casual fan..and till this day I still love watching him at his best.
