It showed me Wilder is a true warrior, regardless of skill level or chin or power you need to be a warrior who is not prepared to shrink when the going gets tough, like a Audley Harrison. Ortiz rocked Wilder very hard, for a minute he was in quite a bit of trouble and he sorta did the right things to survive.

And just the making of the fight showed me what a bunch of dodgy chickens his handlers are. Wilder was going nowhere near people like Ortiz and Klitchko and to me it looked like he ran from Povetkin too when they looked fit and dangerous. It took clear signs of slowing down and aging before they had any intention of taking that fight.

Considering age and heart trouble and blood trouble and the fact he has clearly slowed down its a better win on paper than the reality of it but then AJ,s big win against Klitchko could be put in the same bucket here.

    • I think you gave a fair summation
    • For a lot of users this debate is so polarised it's almost futile = AJ Good/Wilder Bad & vice versa
    • Ortiz has boxed mainly in the US and I suspect been very heavily hyped there. So there's a difference in how he's viewed between US and Non US fans.
    • If you look at his actual record it's not amazing, depending on how you rate Jennings it's at best middling
    • Ortiz had looked faded coming in to fight, but on the night his conditioning etc looked decent.
    • Wilder looked very raw in the first few rounds in comparison to Ortiz
    • Ortiz has ring smarts, great technique and for a big old guy moves well around the ring.
    • Wilder was close to losing his 0 and made to look a very average and sometimes clumsy boxer, but he was also brave, tough, showed a lot of heart and displayed impressive strength, speed and stamina.
    • I thought the cards bore little resemblance to the fight I watched, with those and the refs post interval intervention Ortiz needed a KO from the first bell.
    • Ortiz seems to have been swerved long enough to decline but still looks a danger to any HW for 6-8 rounds. After that however...

Haymon had his referee give Wilder extra time to recover and Haymon's judges had Wilder winning the fight on the cards, which show how corrupt boxing is. Look what the WBC did to keep Povetkin away from Wilder, VADA cleared Povetkin, later Povetkin won in court, found innocent, but WBC has to do what Haymon tells them to do.....................so Wilder will never fight Povetkin, perhaps after Povetkin turns 50?

Klitschkos age has to be taken into account, but Klitschko was a top 10 ATG who hasn't slipped THAT much

Ortiz was about 200 or so places further down the ATG list than klitschko, older, had medical issues etc

My point is if you are going to critique joshuas klitschko win based on age, you better be real about Ortiz too.

Sure klit lost to Fury but i could see that fury making Ortiz look very, very bad too.

Ortiz is a good, solid win for Wilder. His best yet. I think Ortiz can give virtually every HW at the moment something to think about, even if, as Holler points out, Ortiz is old and can't sustain an attack for the whole fight. Ortiz is a legit scalp.

On the downside, Wilder still looks very beatable and Ortiz underlined that. He nearly had Wilder out of there and imho is a considerably better boxer. Wilder needs to sharpen up his skills and continue fighting at this level.

No. Parker, Klitschko and Whyte is far more than one win in Ortiz. Ortiz and Klitschko were both old men with walking sticks, so I don't see how you can say an Ortiz win for AJ would be given more credit. A win over a heavyweight legend is worth far more than some old, fat bloke who lost all his stamina.

    1. Wilder has a granit chin.
    2. Wilder has a big heart and is a true warrior.
    3. Wilder is legit #2 HW out there.
    4. Best win you can have in the HWD right now.

Its Wilders first victory over a top 5 elite HW. Age question marks aside. None of the other champions were queueing up to fight him.

So he deserves a big tick for fighting Ortiz and a big tick for overcoming adversity and the come from behind win.

To truly give Wilder credit he needs to face other elite HWs like AJ or Tyson Fury, or an Uysyk or Gassiev coming up from CW.

It's a very good win. Wilder's skills are slowly improving and combined with his raw athleticism he is a force to be reckoned with. That being said AJ ranks above. Wilder is on par with Whyte and Povetkin.

I think it's a decent win that gives Wilder some credibility. Ortiz was the bets opponent Wilder ever fought after Stiverne I.

Now that Wilder was caught by Ortiz and was on ***** street doesn't improve my estimation of Wilder's long-term viability. He's a knockout waiting to happen.
