Ray Mancini vs. Howard Davis Jr.

Great contrast in styles and could have been a huge TV fight, maybe even headlining a primetime ABC show like they had back in the day.

Mancini’s handlers seemed to want to match him against brawlers — they had a hard-on for Kenny Bogner for a while and I think Charlie “White Lightning” Brown — probably because of the Frias fight.

But I think Ray’s strength, aggression and body punching wear down Howard over 15 for a wide decision after trailing at the midpoint. Would have been interesting for sure.

Another one would be Mancini vs. Sean O’Grady.

I would have liked to have seen Saad vs. Mustafa Muhammad II. It would have been interesting, I think.

Costzee v Cooney could have been fun, too.

Pat Cowdell v Barry McGuigan. There were serious plans afoot for this to happen in Summer 1986 at Villa Park.
Barry's weight making struggles at Featherweight were a superbly kept secret. Had Frank Warren and the Lynch Brothers known about it then Pat would never have half killed himself getting back to 9 Stone and challenging the great Azumah Nelson.
It was thought that Barry wouldn't fight at Super Feather without a World Title on the line but he was dying to move up and this would have set massive records for a European Title fight.
As it was, a grey skinned and drained Pat was iced by Nelson and the over worked and weight dragged Barry was fried by a combination of Steve Cruz and the mid afternoon Nevada heat.

Good post. Quite a few people still have the idea that Muhammad ducked George for two and a half years !

Who would have won a rematch ? How soon after Zaire would have influenced the outcome I reckon. Up to,or instead of,his third fight with Joe Frazier in '75 Ali would have easily won this. After Manila it becomes more of a grey area. Ali slipping quite signifigantly post Manila plus Foreman being much the younger man would have given the challenger a pretty good chance on paper. But not only physical issues were at stake here. Psychological ones would have been too. George's mind was totally owned by Muhammad destroying not only his confidence but his invincible aura.
If Muhammad lies on the ropes again,George gets wary. If the champion takes it to the centre of the ring,he outboxes the challenger. The utmost irony being that Foreman's best chance of winning would be to do what he tried to do in Zaire - Keep wading in and swinging those haymakers. Ali was no longer as good in 1976 as he was two years earlier. I would say that,post-Manila,Ali wins by decision in a slowish bout.

Call me a cynic, but I've a horrible feeling that Tyson Fury-Anthony Joshua may soon be a suitable one for this thread.

Fury is currently the best heavy in the world today and Joshua definitely in the top 3 but if they don't get it on in the next year or so,one of them may get beaten thus robbing any match up between the pair of some of it's lustre.
