Maybe Im going overboard with this assessment, but... this, to me, was one of the worst outcomes G could have had while also still winning the fight. And its not because it was a close fight. (I personally dont have it a robbery but I will score it rbr and see what I get)

    But.... what was that?

Before the usual suspects come in with their 'I always knew G was at this level' crap, you dont get it. Im not talking about the level. Golovkin has shown his limitations for quite some time now.... props to Jacobs for being the fighter to show them. But really, tonight was so much worse for Golovkin than just revealing his level. This was about his mentality.

It was the 8th, 9th, 10th rounds of a fight that was on the line. His titles on the line. And hes cruising around the ring like this is a sparring match. Absolutely no sense of urgency for a fight that close.... it honestly looked like he was a sparring partner brought in to spar the fighter getting ready for a fight so he knows not to go too hard on him.

So what happened? This wasnt a case of Golovkin trying to do something and being beaten back and nullified. This was a case of him almost never leaving first gear. So again, what happened?

    - Either Golovkin was completely intimidated by Jacobs power and it made him overly cautious.
    - Jacobs size and dimensions threw G off a bit.
    - Jacobs hurt Golovkin on the low and it made him cautious
    - Hes having trouble pulling the trigger
    - Hes (I say this term very loosely, I understand all world class fighters are mentally strong. But I mean this relative to the level hes fighting at) somewhat mentally weak and has a bully mentality. Meaning when there was someone in front of him that he didnt completely 100% outmatch he doesnt dig deep to start cultivating work and is willing to coast.

And then to top it all off, he says he didnt want to destroy Jacobs because Jacobs is his favorite fighter? Are you kidding me? I know fighters get way too much crap and get dissected too much for what they say right after a fight while being spotlighted on national television, let alone G who isnt great at english, but... give me a break. Didnt destroy him because Jacobs is his favorite fighter and he needed a decision.

Anyways, tonight wasnt about levels.... tonight was either about Golovkin mentality, or G's declining ability to pull the trigger... because those are the only two excuses for putting in a performance like that, imo.

Age and Jacobs' size and movement.

It inhibited GGG's punch output, the movement.

Credit to Jacobs. But a smaller, less-powerful, less-long-reached, less-fast opponent would have fallen before the 12th round. Jacobs changed strategies about midway through the fight and it not only kept him from being T/KO'd, it also helped him make the fight more competitive.

Jacobs fought a great fight. He did.

Kirk, I hear what your saying but bruuuuuuuuh...you are going over board bruh lol. GG won the 12th and Jacobs is nowhere near as bad as GG's fans said BEFORE the fight. He came within a point on my card of winning the fight.

Interesting assessment. At least he had his jab established, thankfully.

It's possible that Jacobs switching to Southpaw "might have" thrown him off too.

Those comments at the end were indeed odd.

GGG fought a A class fighter that's what happened today. He did win by a narrow margin. The size of Jacobs did nullify his power to KO Jacobs. That's a fact. We have to give Jacobs more credit than he deserves and not just look at how bad ggg looked. GGG look pretty good and was cautious of getting hurt that's why he respected Jacobs and that's why he wasn't letting his hands go as much but he did Outland and outpunch Jacobs to get the UD

Huge respect to Jacobs who came in absolutely laser focused and ready to go out on his shield to win. You could just see the focus in his eyes. I think he deserves a rematch, or at least, I think the boxing world would like one. And I look forward to seeing one and I think a rematch would say a lot.

Jacobs had a really nice jab tonight, and nice defense. And he took some big punches well. Not sure if switching to southpaw should happen in a rematch but maybe that helped keep G off balance and from getting locked on a target.

Anyways, was happy for Jacobs tonight. Look forward to his next fights. His ability to make 160 is worrying though. As, like Golovkin, Im not sure how succesful this current crop of middleweights would fare at 168, even against this unheralded era.

You mean the major fights that are around 50/50 with most posters? I'll assess what happened for you. GGG finally fought an opponent above C level that's not a WW and his true ability was revealed.

Golovkin barely nicked it (and thats debatable) against an 8-1 underdog and was cruising around the ring while the fight was on the line. Tonight could have just as easily been a loss. If team G, and serious fight bettors, arent trying to analyse why this fight played out like this its their mistake.

When Jacobs switched to Southpaw, it seemed to be a liability early, since Triple G caught him with a few good right hands for it. But Triple G still had to adjust to it unexpectedly and that stance almost nullified one of his favorite shots (his left hook).

No. His level has been apparent for awhile, if it took someone this long to see his level I dont know what to say, and if you dont see he never left first gear, then you dont know what you were watching. This fight wasnt about his ability or lackthereof, it was about his mind. He had the physical tools to dominate this fight and he didnt capitalize. He came out the round after Jacobs was hurt in one and wobbled in the other, the next rounds he comes out looking to cruise instead of continuing to up his gears. Now that could be because Jacobs hurt him on the low, and if he did good on him. Or, Golovkin is more gunshy than people think when in with an opponent that can bang.

This was, BY FAR, the best I've ever seen Jacobs fight.

If he fights like this, he's the heir apparent in the division.

That was a great fight he fought.

Oh I don't know what I'm watching but the great Kirk does! He says it's all mental, so that's facts! I guess you missed Jacobs turning GGG, beating him to the punch with his power shots, and using his reach to an advantage. He also took GGG's left hook, and jab away turning south paw, he opened himself to right shots by doing so but it eventually paid off. I thought it was a dumb gameplan but after I saw GGG landing less jabs when jacobs went southpaw I immediately realized I was wrong. GGG also respected Jacobs punching power a lot, and you could see Jacobs power affecting GGG. Was GGG badly hurt at anytime? No, but he did feel the power for sure or he would have just bum rushed like he does in a lot of his fights.

But sure, keep making excuses about how it was all mental, not because the ability was never there. When has GGG dominated Jacobs like talent? Never. I picked Jacobs to win but I thought GGG was the rightful favorite. Before the fight I saw GGG either blasting him out or having major issues with Jacobs movement, reach, and boxing.
