hey guys, i just started boxing again after a long break because i was lifting at the gym and bulking.
    So now i weight about 220 pounds = 100kg. and im 6 feet 4 (195cm)
    my question is -
Right now im in super heavyweight and my coach says ill have a better chance if i weigh 240 pounds, but my friends say ill stand a better chance if i weigh about 198 pounds in heavyweight.
and im really confused if i should gain or lose.. my motivation for bulking is kinda wack because it has been going on for a while and my body fat is very high.. i think like 18 - 20% . So it might be a good idea to cut down to 198 pounds and fight in heavyweight instead.. but im not sure :) i have never had a fight but in a few months im ready.
Btw i just dont want to become like very thin, i kinda like staying bulky but its either up or down right now :)
Guide my through my dilemma :)

If your 198 pounds that would make you a Cruiserweight your friends aren't too bright.

  3. Go to 230-240 pounds. I am 6 feet 2 and my weight is 101 KG, so around 222 pounds. 198 is too low, unless you want to be a cruiserweight.

The amateur Heavyweight limit is 201lbs. There is no amateur Cruiserweight division.

wtf kind of coach is telling you to get up to 240 if you could make 200? That's ludicrous, you'll end up looking like ****ing Kimbo Slice. How old are you?

go down. if your body fat is really that high you have nowhere to go but down. you are wasting too much energy carrying 12% extra weight you dont need. im no strength and conditioning coach but i have boxed as an amateur and at the time my body fat was 7-9%. now that im a fat middle aged man its 19% and im getting moobs.

    Amateurs- hence SHW and HW.

    Not too bright yourself.

Cut the body fat and get down to 200lb.

Agree with cutting the weight, rather than crashing it on. Better to be lithe and athletic than a plodding mass of slow-motion.

If you have to ask a bunch of ****ing nerds on an internet forum what you should be doing then you should probably stick to your shitty day job and forget about boxing.

Not once does he mention being an amateur, although the coach comment should have tipped me off, I didn't bother to read his post that delicately, I'm a DICK:-(

Not an expert, but i would suggest going down.

If you say you have a 18 - 19% Fat percentage then i see no point in gaining more weight. no chance you can put on 100% muscle so your fat percentage will go up further.

You sure your coach isnt just looking to fill the super Heavy catergory as he doesnt have anyone else to fill it?

Before i start let me just say i am a personal trainer but this is still just my opinion and advice. The end decision is yours and no one elses.

Its doable. 20lbs of fat loss would take you to about 10% body fat, if you truly are 20% right now which you need to be sure of becasue a lot of people make mistakes with that. If the data you mention is correct youll have around 40lbs of fat on your body and youll need to lose half of that. Its a lot but can be done.

Where is the weight? upper or lower body? Boxers need good strong legs and people like WIlder for instance have the totally wrong shape for boxing. Like and upside down triangle.

The most important thing is how you feel. You shouldnt ttry to get your body to something its not supposed to be.

If i could give you any advice right now id say cut but go down slowly and make sure you have the right porportion of upper and lower body mass and every 5lbs you lose see how you feel. You can always stop if its not right.

20lbs gain or 20lbs cut isnt going to be a quick thing so you can see how you feel, how you look, take measurements, and perform test to see how your body is changing conditoning and sporting ability.

I would also say dont listen to other people too seriously, even myself, only you know how your body feels at different weights.

Take things on board and see how it goes.
