It really hit me today, Almost 13years, 3months and 5days before we last saw the Great Lion in the squared circle.
Lennox was a great fighter , But I was no fan of his . Doesn't matter because I can recognize and acknowledge greatness whether I root for a fighter or not .
Lennox Lewis could possibly go down as the greatest HW in history in 20 years time, once the misguided and revisionist history love of Ali is smashed and he is placed correctly at around 5th to 6th. Yes I think at this point Lennox Lewis already is now the number 1 HW ever. The way he beat Vitali when clearly post prime, who was an exceptionally strong challenger was amazing. Lewis was an amazing world class HW who would be top dog in any era.
Great fighter but currently one of the most overrated fighters. Fans of his would have you believe he fought in some golden era and never struggled. ATG top 10 heavyweight no doubt but some immortal unbeatable fighter I don't think so.
well he wasnt unbeatable because he was knocked out twice lol. most lewis' fans are gents and scholars.
Lennox is a top 3 HW great Beat every man he ever faced Cemented his legacy with a massive massive win against Vitali + Undispusted and many world title wins.
nothing lucky about them punches, although i think he should have been given a chance to go on vs mccall
Well he is overrated as is every fighter in history by their respective fans. Lewis is a great heavyweight but he wasn't unbeatable and had many an off night.
Naturaly, he wasn't unbeatable, he is not a superhuman. I can see Ali as #1, and Foreman and Lewis sharing #2 & #3. From time to time I consider Foreman as #2, and the day after I consider Lewis....But, only Ali was surely better.
He lost badly to unknown Rahman. I mean bad as in - Landed like a sack of wet potatoes. Plus losing to McCall. His chin isn't that good.
Please don't paint every fan of Lewis' based on the few deluded mutterings of a minority of nuthuggers. They were not "lucky punches" as you say. Lewis' biggest weakness wasn't anything to do with his ability it was to do with his inconsistency as you so correctly point out. He had a bad habit of over looking opponents and under performing such as in his losses to McCall and Rahman. But he also had bad nights against Bruno, Vitali, Mavrovic and even the rematch with Holyfield. At his best he was one of the best ever as we saw against Ruddock, Golota, Holyfield 1 etc. But on a bad night which there were more than a few he was beatable.
His chin was average or slightly better than average, he took some hard shots off of Tua, Briggs, Mercer, Vitali, Holyfield etc and was fine. His biggest weakness was his arrogance which led to inconsistent performances. The Rahman KO was embarrassing, he was SO bad that night, any decent puncher in the top 10 back then could of taken him.
