These once-a-month PPVs are getting out of hand. Especially when they're mostly up-and-comers and contenders. Now Johnson vs. Solis in August? Arum is heading in the wrong direction. It seemed there were alot of really good cards on regular HBO and Showtime and even Versus, but to continue to do this hurts the sport. Most boxing fans will get sick of paying for it, and you will lose any mass appeal with average fans. Save the PPVs for the big fights, lets keep the contenders and title eliminators for free.
I think you're referring to this fight card: link --> http://www.eastsideboxing.com/forum/showthread.php?t=152279 It's a decent fight card with 2 title fights as main events and Solis-Johnson is just one of the undercards... .
Even with a low buy-rate, they must make more money than a Showtime or Versus slot. It's unfortunate if that's the case as it is a HOPELESSLY short-sighted strategy. But if promoters don't like the money they get from tv, they'll try it themselves. Dumb in the long run, but it's rare to accuse boxing promoters of possessing anything resembling a long-term outlook. In effect, it's a pure recognition of boxing as a niche sport. Why try to spread the name of Solis/Johnson when a bit of short-term money can be made as the "true fans" will know about the winner even if they do not buy the PPV. It's an admission that building a wider fan base just isn't worth the money. Stupid and a shame, but seems to be the case.
I dunno but it seems so many peeps are excited on the other thread... link --> http://www.eastsideboxing.com/forum/showthread.php?t=153553 to see Solis fighting Johnson... This Solis-Johnson fight is only an undercard of the Donaire-Concepcion and Luevano-Concepcion main event title fights... .
You can't blame arum. Blame showtime and HBO. They are the ones that don't want to pick up the cards. That leaves PPV as the only choice for arum to bring the fight to the fans.
You certainly can blame the promoters for presenting the networks with lousy cards. Most of the lower-tier PPVs aren't really even worthy of an After Dark or ShoBox.
