Reasonable To Still Include Gans & Leonard In The 135lbs Top Ten?

I have Leonard no1, Gans no 2,at lightweight, but with the more recent additions,is it reasonable to still do so? Or, have they been superseded by and displaced by more modern lightweights?

We don't have the size problem we now have with old time heavies pitted against modern super heavies in H2H's where the old timers have to concede tons of weight reach and height, but has technique, training advanced so far that the old turn of the century and 1920's 135pounders would struggle today?
What do you think, do they still make your top ten? Top five?

Why would Leonard be outdated? I'm sure Gans would do well in any era. I'd be a lot more confident putting an old timer in a modern fantasy fight than vice versa, usually

Well said and I agree here ….. also Duran has a solid case for a top spot imo

Still automatic top 5 and fighting it out with Duran for top spot.

Personally I think Henry Armstrong might have been the greatest fighter to ever compete at the weight but can't rate him higher because he didn't compete there long enough.

I think it’s very reasonable and I would generally put Leonard as #1 and Gans has an excellent case for #2.

Duran is the popular and more modern pick but I think Carlos Ortiz might rate higher. Also dominant (like Duran) but vs. better opposition and the film holds up with him being just a few years before Duran and I would probably pick Ortiz to win a three fight series with Duran.

Yeah definitely reasonable to have them top ten many have them 1 & 2. I have Gans at 1, both likely have the best resumes at the weight. I think Gans looks very good on film especially against Kid Herman and Leonard on film is clearly skilled. I don't put a great deal on head to head when ranking someone as nobody truly knows how an outcome of fantasy fight will go if so we'd all be billionaires of gambling.

I think it's not just reasonable but expected to have both of them in a LW top ten list, and neither would be out of place on a P4P ATG list, either. As was already stated, Gans looks very good on film and Leonard was obviously well ahead of his time.

Good posting and it mirrors my views. I've wrestled for years on who the top lightweights were and what helps Gan's being number 1 is that he apparently was already sick in the Nelson fights and would have had near shut outs if they were over 15 rounds. Footwork, combinations, speed, defense, chin and stamina make him number 1 on my list (I don't think the McGovern loss was real). I have questions about Benny's chin but rate him over Duran as Roberto had problems with a few slick boxers and Leonard was very skilled. Ike a very strong number 4 and maybe Ortiz competes for a number five spot.

I don't know if this is controversial, but it is interesting that most people that would see this as justifiable wouldn't justify some of the older heavyweights being in consideration for a top 5 ranking. Every fighter needs to be judged on an individual bases, but it does make you question how much size comes in to equation when ranking the heavyweights.

Sorry to make this about heavyweights btw, I know we get enough of these threads, but just found it funny

I touched on this in my OP

Not done a full top 10, but I'd be shocked if I could come up with 10 to rank ahead. Gans, especially, might be at the top.

    Packey McFarland too IMO.

    I still have them no.1 and no.2.

There’s no one who fought at 135 from Whitaker onwards who makes my top 20.
