good thread. So much of the time, things are negative, but we are all here and such avid fans because we love the sport. Some things that I like: 1. Being a fan of a particular fighter, its his whole life. You know when he enters the ring, if he looses, its not, we'll get them next week, or next year, that could be it for his whole career. 2. Every fighter is different, not just someone playing a position. Every fighter has their own style and personality 3. There is no cheering the guy one week because he is on your team, and then he gets traded and he is your opponent. The fighter is the team and always his himself. 4. Anything can happen, until the last bell rings its still anyone's fight. 5. You can be a fan of a fighter and you have a select range of fights that can all be individual.
Not sure on that, Baseball and Horse raceing has a pretty rich history to compare or even surpass boxing.
I always get a laugh when I hear from some cat in a bar about how he is a "lifelong [Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics, etc.] fan" --my retort is always the same: "what does that mean? You like the uniform? Because the guys in them change every five years!" In boxing, if you're a fan of Marco Antonio Barrera, there's no confusion.
so true. I think it was different before baseball teams had the huge salaries that they have now, salary caps and greedy assed ball players. I mean, you knew most of the team because it was the same group of guys last year and the year before. Now, its like one group of guys one year, the next, an entirely new staff. But most sports fans like that team based mentality.
Back when boxing was really big, horse racing was really big too. I think the world has gone from one that values the indiviual to one that values an organization. I am no longer a man o war fan. The way he fathered all those little ponies after he retired, disgusting.
Did he had a choice though?? I mean if you were retire and had fame, women be thowing themselfs at your feet also lol.
Boxing just rules, what other sport do you get to go man to man, hand to hand combat? No distractions, just a contest to see who is the superior man.
Roman chariot racing certainly had an equivalent--look what happened to Messala in BEN-HUR. A whole career could go south in a flash.
Horse racing, certainly. It is interesting that character is revealed most in these two sports. I know it sounds odd, but a horserace really exposes the "heart" of the horses.
Best thread I have seen in a long time. IMO Boxing is equal first in the world of sports, its competitor being Athletics. Both are the purest measures of human performance. In Athletics the measure is the fastest, strongest, and longest - depending on the event. In boxing, it is some combined metric of those 3. Both sports push the boundaries of human performance, bravery and spirit. Both sports glorify individual talent and drive. There is no hiding on an athletics track or in a boxing ring. Both sports are brutally honest, although athletics actually outperforms boxing in this regard. You cannot bull**** a mile in under 3 minutes 50 secs, while you can potentially bull**** a points decision in boxing through smoke-and-mirrors. One final point of comparison is an unfortunate one. Both sports have seen their best days already, through talent dilution, softer lifestyles and drug taking.
Lovely thread. Your soul is laid bare in boxing. Man up or fall down. It closely follows the doctrine of nature - survival of the fittest.
Boxing can fill in the blanks of the old ABC network's wide world of sports trailer. The thrill of victory, the agony of defeat.
