At 9:10 Ben Bentley states that Marciano and Louis would have no problems with Mike Tyson, interesting......

He sees it for what the films show.

Personally, I don't value trainers opinion while they are working much as they are favorable to those they worked with. However, if you go back to before they were born, I think they can be more objective. Steward has always been an honest type.

1 ) Matchmakers - I tend to value them the most

2 ) Historians - 2nd for me, especially on limited or no film. Good for the timeline in which they lived.

3 ) Trainers - Mostly outside their working periods. Best at technical analysis.

4 ) Media - Unfortunately guys Like Teddy Atlas and Max Kellerman bring down the average. Some like Steve Farhood, and Al Bernstein as very good.

I a a huge fan f Steward but felt he commented to n Johnson’s fights against Burns and Ketchel, small men while ignoring us huge earlier career success against big talented heavyweights.

Jeez guys give it a rest will you. Steward had better things to do to really delve deep in to past fighters every detail.

It's interesting that none of the trainers.Arcel ,Steward etc even mentioned Jeffries or considered him worthy of being included in the conversation.

The average weight of Johnson's challengers was the highest up until Joe Louis became champion.

I had this idea and wanted to do it for my channel for the longest time but it’s hard with time constraints.

Like a “Modern boxers react to old school boxers,” type of video.

When I was working out at the boxing gym for almost a year, it was almost split down the middle. Half the boxers/trainers swearing by the old timers, and the other half sort of brushing them off.

I'm seeing lots of non-heavies. I am particularly interested in filmed heavies, from Corbett onward, say to Marciano.

I remember Tommy Morrison sitting next Manny Steward in one of the Ringside episodes saying that he didn't think Rocky Marciano could "bang with me" @188lbs nevermind Lennox.

Hi Kev, both James Toney ( as mentioned by others ) and Bernard Hopkins were massive devotees of watching old fighters on film as was Mike Tyson. I have read interviews and seen videos were both of these guys wax lyrical about old fighters. Hopkins is a big Jersey Joe Walcott fan and his trainer Bouie Fisher was a huge Sugar Ray Robinson fan. Mike Tyson and Floyd Mayweather both grew up watching old fights and benefited immensely by being taught how to box by proper old school trainers ( Floyds old man and uncle, Tyson with Cus ).

An interesting thread with some really thought provoking posts.

    Cheers All.
