Recent Welterweight Lineage

Its not rocket science.....When a champion retires and vacates his title(Floyd Mayweather) the two top contenders fight( Mosley and Margarito), the winner wins the vacant title and restarts lineage(Shane Mosley).

Mayweather never lost in the ring, but he offically retired, had he not retired and just had a period of inactivity he would still have a claim to the title but he lost it upon retirement.

 

Explain how Mosley ranked above Cotto at that point despite having lost to Cotto in his last fight at Welterweight?

 

I think the Berto Vs Mosley Fight was going to determine the linear champ at welter. It was going to unify the 2 more important belts at the weight, WBA & WBC. As good as Manny is, he's got a boot legged belt if you ask me

 

This is how rankings work......When Margarito and Mosley fought, Cotto had already lost to Margarito who moved to the number one spot and becuase Cotto lost he dropped a spot and Mosley moved from three to ranked number two.

Rankings 'work' however you want them to work. There's no logical reason when someone loses that you have to move them down below someone who they just beat at all. In fact that's completely illogical. The majority of rankings prior to Margarito v Mosley had Margarito at 1, Cotto at 2 and Mosley at 3.

You should at least acknowledge that, rather than suggesting you are representing somekind of consensus opinion. Your personal rankings may have been as you say, but you'd very much be in the minority there.

 

Berto, though a bit green, is undefeated, champ, and active in the weight division. More than you can say about Mayweather, fighting blown up old lw's, and Cotto who was given belt. Pacquiao, some can argue, took on the weakest champ/belt in the weight.

IBF certainly was in the great 90's. Where top lw's and welters actually fought each other, and would unify belts. The days of JCC. Those were the best times.

and Margo vs Mosley was #1 vs #3. Cotto was still #2 at that point

 

If the guy you beat is one spot under you, and you just lost how is it not logical that he be ranked a spot below. Considering Cotto lost by brutal stoppage, and I believe Cotto beat Mosley by a split descision. We can agree to disagree

the lineal championship is still Vacant at WW and will remain so until #1 vs #2 fight. Right now the top 2 are Pac and Mosley with Floyd #3. So if the winner of Mosley vs PBF fights the winner of Pac vs Clottey, there can be a new lineal champ

 

Floyd deserved no right to claim the title for the moment. After he retired, hes only fight in this weight was JMM who is not a real WW.
