Hey, I'd like to order a couple of boxing books and just looking for suggestions, as it is hard to get feedback on this. I'm more interested in things published semi-recently (say 1990 on). I've read The Last Great Fight (worth reading), The Gloves (a mixed bag), and Facing Ali. What else is out there? Thanks! Also, has anyone read Joe Calzaghe's book- seems like it would be interesting, but i think its hard to get a hold of
Try Adam Pollack's series on the Heavyweight champions. There's three of them so far, and they're great. VERY well researched: www.winbykopublications.com/books.html
Here's a sample of my library. I was able to get a lot of these books at discout because I work at a bookstore. The Last Great Fight (Tyson-Douglas) Hands of Stone (Roberto Duran) Pound for Pound (Ray Robinson) Joe Louis Facing Ali Facing Tyson Iron Mike Bert Sugar On Boxing Joyce Carol Oates On Boxing Shadow Box by George Plimpton Boxing's Greatest Fighters by Bert Sugar Going the Distance (Ken Norton) By George (George Foreman)
Anger managment - Mike Tyson The Art of Boxing - Ricardo Mayorga Consistency - Dominick Guinn The Art of Defense - Arturo Gatti
A few of my favorites: Only in America: The LIfe and Crimes of Don King by Jack Newfield The Holyfield Way by James Thomas (A bit rose colored, but, the fight negotiation information is very interesting Ghosts of Manilla by Mark Kram (Beware, though, very pro-Frazier and anti-Ali) From the Streets to the Ring: A Son's Struggle to be a man by Teddy Atlas Thomas Hauser is good and I have a few of his collections that he puts out of all the stories he has written each year. If you read his Ali stuff note that he is a total Ali fanatic and apologist. He also puts out each holiday season a list of recommended reading. Here is this year's list: http://www.secondsout.com/USA/news.cfm?ccs=229&cs=23448&highlight=holiday%20read
The Boxing Register is always great to thumb through - even when you aren't looking for records and such.
I've read Calzaghe's book and it was an entertaining read. Should be easy enough to get a hold of. I'm currently set to read Ricky Hatton's book as I purchased it the other night. Just need to get done with my current book first. I'll post some thoughts on it when I've read a few chapters. And my old man recommends Big Joe Egan's book; The Toughest White Man on the Planet. Said it was really good and that it contained many good stories about his time training up with Tyson at Cus D'amato's camp.
Two that i like that were published slightly before 1990 are a must.. Serenity... and Blood season.. Dark trade is a good read.. two Biographies are the Larry Holmes one.... and the Joe Frazier one.. Not the one by Phil Pepe circa.. 1973.. There have been a zillion Tyson Biographies.. I like the ones by Jose Torres, and Thomas Hauser... release of power.. Mamas boy the Lenox Lewis biography is awesome too...... But look a lot earlier.................. for the best boxing book you could wish to find.. The Black lights.. Thomas Hauser... Its the bomb.......... God bless...................................
