Recommended self defence styles?

    firstly, apologies as this is a BOXING training forum, but this is the closest site i'm familiar with.

    anyway, anyone here take take part in any self defence (on top of boxing)?

    i've been doing boxing training for years now, but have only sparred a handful of times so i am in better than average condition and am not interested in getting into sparring and competing due to work commitments (so i am not fighting fit).

    at the same time, i'd like to at least have a chance in this big bad world of ours if the **** hits the fan. :D

    i'm looking into krav maga. anyone do that?

    does boxing training help or hinder self defence classes?

    Boxing is a great form of self defense, sparring is the closest you get to fighting.

    if you wanna make some money then boxing, also you'll be able to handle yourself on the street.

    but if you wanna become a human weapon then without a doubt Muay Thai.
    these guys will make a boxer look like a *****, no joke.
    Thank God i can do both, and i;ve seen many boxers come to the gym, after getting kneed to the ribs or kicked, they cant hack it.

    dont waste your time with anything but boxing. I do tkd and I can tell you for sure that diverting your attention to krav maga, Muy thai, tkd, karate, bjj, whatever will just waste your time because you wont learn it to a high enough level to be usefull. You learn a few kicks & knees & grabs enough to open yourself up without doing any real dammage. Just intensify your boxing training and you'll be more than fit to defend yourself.

    Anybody who would inquire about "self defence classes" has never been anywhere near a boxing club.

    that's a fair comment. from what i've seen, boxing hass the best focus on conditioning, which i think is 90% of the battle.

    at the same time, i'm not sure how boxing techniques translate in street situations. would focusing too much on boxing training leave you open for kicks and grapples? and it seems like punching without wraps could get you in a bit of strife. what do you think?

    Hi mate,
    Your boxing training should carry you through the majority of encounters you have on the street. (hopefully you won't have any but still)

    I know you said above that you really don't want to spar, but being honest if we're talking self defence here then you really need to spar and you should be doing it on a regular basis, in order for you to be prepared for something going wrong on the street. As when the adrenalin gets dumped into your body, you may freeze, at least if you have plenty of sparring under your belt, you should be working on auto pilot, and you will have experienced the adrenalin dump first hand.

    And as Relentless correctly pointed out above, sparring is as close to real fighting as you will ever get, anyone that trains for self defence and does not spar on a regular basis is really kidding themselves on.

    Also you may want to take up something like Judo to compliment your boxing skills mate. Throwing someone or sweeping or tripping them onto cold hard concrete really can take the fight out of someone, especially if you follow it up with a punch or kick. Also with Judo you should progress quickly when you start with Randori, or free sparring.

    Also, your best form of self defence is awareness, being able to spot trouble ahead and avoiding it is really your best bet, but if some looney decides to take a swing or grab for you then boxing and judo will cover most of your bases.

    Muay Thai is boxing but also with kicks, knees and elbows. How is that a waste of time? Even just the basic techniques can be very effective.

    Whatever the martial art, self defense always comes down to the individual. Some people may be great at boxing in the ring but don't have it in them to full on punch someone in the face during a fight outside of the ring.

    i did/ do tkd,aikido,boxing,muay thai

    and all honestly i found that boxing really is all business. i mean muay thai does have alot of emphasis on dealing with your opponant. but boxing is all about koing guys and keeping you safe as possible.

    tkd is too counterbased and way too much taunting for my liking anyways. which is why the W.T.F. (the olympic style taekwondo) is boring. but I.T.F (kickboxing style) is much more sparring bsed and alot more proffesional and business like.

    and i have never felt that grappling martial arts are a good self defence. you have to be standing and be able to move. once your on the floor in a good position or not you have lost all advantages becuase you know that the other guy has more than 1 mate. and you can only deal with 1 at a time. my mate jason does a mma thing (news just in he is actually looking to sign with cage rage) and he always reminds me that strikers are kings...they have to have soem grappling abilty but strikers are the erasers and therefore can ko a guy and get ouf of the area fast as poss.
