If I had the time, the money, and the will power, I'd learn BJJ, Krav Maga, and Muay Thai for self defence.
good points. the more serious the **** you find yourself in,the more likely it is that you will use an appropriate amount of force to win the battle.I have not trained in anything other than standup,so i make deadly sure that the other guy stays at the range i need him to be at.No way i get a guy grabbing me without firing off a volley of shots to keep him off me. Like i said i cant do the ground stuff, so i have no choice but to do everything in my power to stay on my feet. If someone wants a fight so bad that i have to respond then they must of desrved it,as i walk away 9 times out of 10.
I've never done muay thai but can I ask a basic question - the punches in muay thai are basically boxing punches aren't they? Hooks, uppercuts, jabs and straights?
To be honest the more you train to fight, the more you train your mind to avoid situations where you are put in a position to fight, i have respect for my opponent if it's in a gym or on a street, and I wont fight unless i have to. If you do get into a situation on the street and your a stand up guy and you have a fight, the chances are the guy your fighting wont have any skills because the type of guy who goes out and street fights has very little skills, so punch him in the face. If you train and have graded in martial arts you have a license from the Judo or Muay Thai council, if you commit an assault crime against a civilian it is assault with a deadly weapon, so i walk away unless i feel i am in serious danger, and if thats the occasion i just use my skills.....
You do one or the other. Boxers use punches. Muay Thai fighters use punches, kicks, knees and elbows. So in theory Muay Thai would obviously be more effective for self defense. But if your grabbed or taken down (which tends to happen in most fights) both boxing and Muay Thai are useless.
boxing is definatley a good form of self defence on the street but i think you need to know a little bit of wrestling too, remember there is no weight categories or rules in a street fight, if your fighting a bigger dude and he takes you down you need to know how to handle yourself on the groung too. I think muay thai is the best for the street, they have grapple take downs, knees, elbows, punches and kicks.
basically but thrown from a square on stance and probably with less power, muay thai fighter are known to have the hardest kick out of all fighting styles. If you watch a thai fighter there punches dont usually follow through like a boxer would because a thai fighter is usually setting up a knee, elbow or kick. Punches score the least points in a thai fight.
