I'm virtually sure we're in record territory now. Hes ad the record for defenses to start a title reign, but now I think he's got the record overall. Has any HW ever had 5 title defenses in a row against fighters not ranked in the top 10 by ring or even alot of boxing fans? I don't think so. Vitali had 4 between Arreola and Adamek, but alot of people had Solis top ten at the time. Louis, Patterson, Ali and Holmes had some stretches, but nothing like this. Virtually nobody had any of Wilders defenses as top 10 hw's, let alone Ring. It's a shame because I really want to like Wilder. I think he's got a ton of talent. But he's got zero ambition as a fighter. I just don't think someone like that is going to strike their claim as an ATG. From a matchup perspective, I could go either way with who would win between AJ and Wilder, but I'll pick AJ because he's shown he has the ambition and heart of a champ and Wilder just hasn't.
I'm sure some fighters have similar awful record defense numbers... and I'm even more sure that there have been fighters with worse competition than Deontay despite their opponents potentially being in the top 10. I don't like Wilder a ton, but that's my take on it.
Also, I think Wilder is in the sport to make money first and be great second, and there's nothing wrong with that. I'm pretty sure his daughter has health issues that are going to be extremely expensive throughout her entire life. I'm not going to knock on a guy with an avenue to make a lot of money, who does so, while having perfectly valid reasons to do them. Tough **** if I personally dislike his competition levels.
I didn't think particularly hard about the question, because it's one that's been regurgitated constantly on this site for years. Beyond that, even ATG heavyweight Joe Louis managed to take on opposition that was perceived to be so poor that it was nicknamed in scorn. All these complaints really aren't new. Ali fought some competition that would make Duhaupas blush.
Fair enough, bit as fans we have the right to criticize and expect more. Also, he could make more money if he had more ambition. I think he could beat Parker, which would make him more money even at 50/50 than this fight. Then he'd be in a commanding position to get a 50/50 cut with AJ for a mega fight
The complaints aren't new, but their validity is new. Louis bums of the month were actually usually quite good. Many were top ten fighters. Alot of champs defenders were overly maligned. Now sure, Ali had a couple defenses that were worse than anyone Wilder ever fought, but he interspersed those with great defenses. Wilders are consistently bad in a way the division has never seen before. That's not a good thing, and we shouldn't just accept it or provide false equivalency. It a new thing and a bad development for boxing
I guess what rights we have to dictate what professional athletes do is up for interpretation. No fighter makes anyone buy their fights. Also, if he had more ambition he's several times more likely to lose... which is completely the opposite of what any intelligent man in his position would realistically do. I dislike the guy. Hate the dancing, **** talk, clowning, so on and so forth. But I'd love to see anyone with a seriously ill daughter in his exact circumstances suddenly be clamoring for very realistic losses against better opposition. It is what it is, fans need to understand and accept it, because I very much doubt it's going to change until he gets the opportunity for a massive payday he can't say no to.
If you want to dig into even the recent past, you can find far worse opposition ending up in title fights on a consistent basis. Just take a peek at some of the lower weight classes.
No fighter makes anyone buy their fights, but no fan makes any fighter listen to our complaints. And also, if we don't watch, that effects their pocketbook. We have every right to complain, and in fact, an obligation when it's effecting the sport in as negative a way as his conduct is
I guess I'm not quite that invested into the sport if that's the case. I just don't see it that way but understand and respect your view point.
Not at HW. Not at a level remotely this consistent. What I've posted is quantifiable. If you think their is something comparable, give a specific instance. I'm confident it's never happened before. And boxing deserves better.
There are more options and opponents to pick today with all the ranking jargon.... Team Wilder simply is taking easy street ,end of . The fact he literally said he was not interested in Klitchko already WHEN the fight was a possibility should say it all . Joshua would put his lights out !There simply on different levels ! Should the fans be upset NOW? Yea this isnt WWE we pay $ to at least get legit fights from at least a WBC Champion who has 30 something fights ,but mark my words ,Joshua or Klitchko is going to collect them all again and we will have one champion who wants the best guy to k.o!
Maybe he does. But the fact remains, he already has 4 title defenses, right? That in itself is a rare feat in the rich history of the heavyweight division, even in the modern age when we have a slew of worthless alphabet trinkets.
