...Pretty different. Soccer kicks is a rule where a downed opponent gets kicked in the head, you're talking about one of two ways to finish a fight being severely penalised. How many submission fighters would become much more cautious and cost themselves a lot more fights because of this ridiculous rule where if their opponent refuses to tap, they get fined or whatever ridiculous punishment is in place?

Maybe Nog should've tapped, then. It wasn't bad for the sport, it's a rare occurance, and who knows, people have the morbid curiosity to see these things anyway. It doesn't happen often, there's just certain fighters who have too much pride and pay the price. It happens, maybe the issue should be more the UFC replaying the gruesome footage over and over again rather than stick a fine rule on limb breaking submissions. What was Mir supposed to do? Just stay there and wait for Nog to tap? It wasn't happening, he had to break it, it wasn't his fault.

what a weak argument...you can still finish fights with strikes...and there are restrictions on subs as well

no one would tap if they knew they had zero reason to...no tap...ref stops them, and they start over? what the f, just remove grappling, put on bigger gloves and...oh, it's muay thai

How is it terrible for the sport? It IS the sport. What happens when you mess around with limb manipulation? There is a high risk for broken bones.

That's like saying crashes in NASCAR is bad for the sport. No **** you're going to crash when driving fast.

No look at the Danzig fight and the arguments that caused. For one thing the Hardy fight would of been stopped GSP looked to be on the verge of snapping his arms a few times in that fight and he got out of them.

I think it would cause to much trouble for refs some times people look on the verge of tapping out or going out from chokes and other sups but manage to squeeze out if the ref stops it because it looks like something is going to happen it would cause way too much arguments

Not forgetting the Shane Roller fight, though that was more down to miscommunication.

Nog is known for being hard headed. It was his own damn fault for not tapping.

I'm not a BJJ expert, but I'm guessing that the margin between keeping a kimura locked-on to the maximum efficient level without breaking the arm is not exactly far away from actually breaking the arm. Am I right? Or can a BJJ expert actually measure this accurately in the Octagon while he has the hold in place and the opponent is doing all he can to escape?

If the margin is as slim as I believe it is, at a guess, then it would be ludicruous to fine or suspend a fighter for breaking a limb.

The ball truly is in the opponents court here. It should be up to him to tap. If anyone is to blame for what happened on Saturday then its Nog, just for being such a ****ing hard-ass and refusing to tap.

I like your suggestion OP, people who are disagreeing with this, do they also disagree with refs stopping fights when a fighter is getting his head pounded in, but is still conscious and doesn't want to quit, refs stop these fights all the time. So why does the ref stop these? because he makes a decision that the fighter is in deep trouble and there is no escape without significant injury.

The ref should always have full discretion on when to stop a fight. To suggest otherwise is dangerous at best. Fighters are who they are because they're willing to go through **** that the average human being isn't, which includes not tapping or quitting when they should.

Why "should"? Machida didn`t tap and was out before he could and the ref stopped it so the ref can stop it even if you don´t tap

Machida didn't tap ans Big John stopped the fight. In actual fact I think that Herb stopped the fight when Mire broke Tims arm and he never tapped. I remember Tim complaining saying that he never tapped and Herb explaining that his arm was broken.

No. The is for non-pro fights.

At that level they know the score.

    What next... no headshots?

Look, guys like Mir, Palhares, Aoki, and Babalu are the breed of grapplers that, if you dont tap, its nap or snap and I think it's ok. One fighter's pride shouldn't cause all this uproar.
