Kimura's are too hard to tell because guys have gottin out of them while in nasty positions. Anyone remember Huerta getting out of the kimura against Maynard? That was nasty, yet he wasn't injured. If it's a straight armbar from the top, and it's obvious a fighter cannot get out, then it's the job of the ref to protect the fighter from injury. And I say that about that sub, because it's pretty obvious when a guy can't get out of it and it's much easier to injury someone from that position.
It did look like it was going to break at the time though. Pretty sure if refs were told to intervene if they thought an injury was going to occur he would have stopped it.
Henderson would also have been stopped in the first Cerrone fight under this rule, some guys are bendier than others. In regards to Nog, he had ample time to tap, it reminded me of the Gracie/Hughes fight. Royce clearly wasn't going to tap and would rather have had his arm broken and Hughes would have been fully justified in doing so. Anyone who's ever rolled knows when they're ****ed and it's time to tap.
I can't believe this is being debated in so many threads.... This is top level mma, these guys are, quite simply, devastating machines in comparison to Joe public....they know the risks, nog isn't complaining, machida isn't complaining, of course there are risks, this is elite level combat sport... Anyone who has ever competed even at low level knows the risks, iv seen arms broken in clubs... Buy the ticket, take the ride....
It may have looked like it, but Hardy got out of it. GSP was pretty much at the end of what he could do in that position.
I know. This is my point. You cannot have refs guessing in the heat of the moment how close a guy is to getting something snapped off. The tapping system works fine as it is, if it gets too much you can tap out, if you don't tap you get something broken. I bet every ref there is would have stopped the Hardy GSP fight if they were given the job of stopping fights before things get broken even if the guy doesn't tap. And besides, no ref would have been able to save Big Nogs arm due to the speed it went from a standard kimura to a WTF DID HE JUST DO TO HIS ARM?! So this really is a ****ing stupid debate.
No, the ref should never be allowed to stop a fight before a tapout or brake, thats ridiculous... its up to the fighter thats trapped because he knows the score... bringing in stupid rules like this only gives more opportunity for controversial refereeing decisions. Also... on another note, the soccer kicks to the head should never have been banned either, this sport is the closest thing we have to real fighting, its been watered down enough already, let warriors be warriors.
If I rememeber correctly it was Jermey Stephens that had a fight stopped by the ref against Din Thomas while locked in a straight armbar. Tho I cannot remember who the ref was, but he was gonna get it snapped had it not been stopped because it was a no hoper for Jeremey.
Still not hearing any decent explanations for why a new sub rule would be any different to the outlawing of soccer kicks etc, which were relied upon by some strikers to finish fights. :think
I'm not to sure I know what you mean by this "but you're not accustomed to seeing people release subs if they cannot elicit a tap.".
atsch nog didnt tap he has accepted that its his fault, i really dont understand why everyone is so displeased about this get over it, its not your limbs getting broke and 99.9% of the time the tap comes, nog was too up his own arse about not getting subbed and he is paying the price, i bet next time he will tap
Because your new sub rule makes submission fighters take penalties for fighting? Because no one would ever tap knowing that their opponent won't actually break their arm because they won't want the financial penalty. Your proposed rule change could very well lead to MORE broken limbs as fighters may believe that their opponent won't follow through for the actual snap. You are letting your feelings for Nog get in the way of clear judgement. Your proposed rule change is stupid and bad for the sport. Soccer kicks are more dangerous in a cage than in a ring, and removing ONE possible attack isn't the same as devaluing every single type of joint manipulation. Besides, Soccer kicks have been illegal in the NA MMA for what seems like forever.
