Mercante was very good amateur, in Golden Gloves as a teen he was matched in first bout with Juan LaPorte, because both were very good, and LaPorte won tough bout. Due to having money and god job (He is in stage hand union) he never turned pro, but always stayed in shape. About 10 years ago, a stage hand working with him kept running mouth, saying he could beat him in ring. Mercante finally got pissed, and they set up match, he beat guys ass.
Of LaPorte fight or stage hand one? I have neither, I don't think one of LaPorte fight exists, I saw neither, but Mercante- LaPorte result was listed in New York Daily News, in opening round results, year LaPorte won NYC Golden Glove title. The fight with ball -busting co-worker I heard about through some stage hand guys I met. I met Mercante many times, have not seen him in about 10 years. Great person, kind of guy who is friendly to everyone, a down to earth type. I can't stand him as ref though, hate to say it, but he is too in on action all the time. Probably why he had to duck that punch
