Probably a boring subject but I'm stuck in the middle of nowhere and have just watched (probably for the 1000th time) Duran - Leonard I and Frazier - Ali III....Both of them epic fights made greater by the third man in the ring, a man who dived into the action and consistantly pulled hands away to stop holding and only ever broke the action when it had completely come to an impasse. It is no surprise to me that the ref on both occasions was Carlos Padilla, the third man who could ensure that the action flowed. To me he is the greatest referee of all time... what do other posters think?....and why don't refs become more involved in keeping fighters honest these days?

What fight did Padilla get real **** for? I think I remember him getting hauled over the coals for something or other.

(Not that I'm saying he wasn't a good ref!)

I don't know mate, but I'm sat in my winnebago watching Duran - Leonard and Ali - Frazier thinking what an absolutely awesome ref he was...Getting stuck in, pulling hands away rather than breaking the action, great stuff and not like the stiffs today. Just seen Hagler dust Hearns, sad day :?

Enjoy!!! It was I just had this flashback to a fight in the 80s where he got stick but I couldn't remember which one. A bit annoying!!

I remember my Dad cleaning up on Hagler stopping Hearns @ 6/5. We listened to it on the radio at daft o'clock in the morning and then up for school and work.

I'm on a Leonard downer...I never liked the bloke then and I don't like him now. He always eemed to get the rub of the green. Bring back 15 round championship fights, its got to happen :deal

I#d love to see 15 rounders return mate but it'll never happen unfortuneatly.

Leonard was a great fighter, the games he played over weight after Hagler were a PITA but his welterweight career was very impressive.

It maybe worth mentioning that, in the time of 15 round championship fights, Leonard knocked out Tommy Hearns in the 14th round while behind on points.......great fighters pace fights!!!;)

Yet he beat Hagler, Hearns, Duran... and by my estimation is greater than any of them. And he really did beat Hagler - people give Marvin too much credit for hurting Ray in 5 rounds, compared to the 7 that Ray was making him chase and miss.
