I'm seeing stoppages like Mitchell vs Ibragimov and Theophane vs Murphy and I don't think they are terrible stoppages but I don't think they are amazing stoppages. I do think the fighter won't be happy with them and rightly so.

It must be put in the rules that a referee warn a fighter prior to the stoppage unless the guys lights have been put out i.e. Castillo switching off against Corrales.

Fight back, I'm going to step in... something has to be coined for a ref to tell the fighter. If Murphy and Ibragimov were told fight back and have nothing left then step in.

I have seen this done before but it's been the refs decision to say it to a fighter rather than a rule . However I think it would be a good idea to implement this as a rule in order to stop a lot of the stupid stoppages we see from time to time , Tyson furys last two fights to name but a few .

No, the referee has the right to stop the fight whenever he deems fit, there is no need to give a warning, and no reason to do so. It could make the sport more dangerous otherwise.

Technically fighters are warned pre fight anyway.

I think it depends on the situation, for example if a fighter is hurt and on the ropes, getting hit, some referees say "punch back" or "do something" or "give me a sign", if a fighter is caught flush and absolutely out of his feet though, well, there's no point

Didn't the ref in the Angulo-Kirkland fight warn Kirkland he was going to stop it if he didn't throw back in the very first round? It's not a bad idea, but if a fighter is completely gone, a ref shouldn't say 'dude, throw back soon'. He should stop that **** quick

Fighters aren't mind readers. They are getting punched in the face, they aren't aware of the what the refs intent is. There is no rule as to when to fight back.

Murphy for example was in the process of slipping when the ref decided to step in.

Isn't that part of the point of the standing 8 count?

Give them a standing eight count; give them the chance to fight on. The boxer who hurt them takes a point.

So maybe standing 8 counts just need to be used more often in those borderline stoppage situations where a boxer is defending himself but not punching back when hurt.

    Not really.

Standing 8 counts prolong the punishment and doesn't stop a poor stoppage following the 8 count.

It isn't about letting them fight on, its about letting them know the ref intends on stepping in.

If a ref is stepping in then a fighter can immediately show he is fine verbally and/or physically.

I totally agree that they should be warned, im 100 percent sure Murphy could have continued last night without being badly hurt or even correctly stopped. However the Mitchell stoppage last night was totally fair!

The referee is always the best judge as to when to stop a fight, during the fight. It maybe he feels he can warn (and it happens) someone to punch back. But it should not be mandatory, as a situation may occur when a fight needs to be stopped immediately.

I'm against refs doing that in that situation. If someone is hurt, then the best tactic may be just to cover up and try to avoid getting hit clean too much. If they are "forced" to punch back in that state, they may be leaving themselves open to a KO punch. Or at least, do fighters not have the right to select the tactics they want to use?

If someone is just covering up on the ropes for a prolonged period, that is no reason to stop a fight imo. If they are hurt and having to take some hard shots that is still no reason to stop a fight.

The test of whether a fight should be stopped in that situation is whether the fighter is able to make a reasonable effort to defend themselves.
