Certainly not a classic, necessarily, but it was a decent fight. Some blame it for the present HW title mess. Maybe, maybe not. Toney's jab was awesome, better than will probably be remembered. Peter certainly had his moments, although I felt many of his flurries were ineffective. It was a tough one to score at times. I scored it today and had Rounds 1, 7, and 8 difficult to score. Not saying they were, just were to me, and I didn't want to rewatch them. Being admittedly biased for Toney, I gave them to Sam Peter. Even doing so, I had Toney winning 114-113. I know this has been discussed, but I would like a fresh perspective.
Toney's entire career at HW is one big cluster****. Fights he should have gotten the nod in, like Peter I... Others like the original TKO in Rahman II becoming a NC. Meh.
That's true. And the Fres fight which he clearly lost. According to his website, he's dropping down to 225 and fighting in May.
Toney was a pig in 2006 but still good enough to beat the slobbish Sam Peter, only to get reamed....... The '07 rematch was all Peter..... Toney was flat and sluggish throughout... Here in 2009, at age 40, Toney is sliding down the flag pole.... 225 pounds or not, age is catching up to him...... Toney has got about another year or two in which he can hang with the top-10 heavyweight boys, then he'll be reduced to a steppingstone.... SR.BILL
I thought Toney won that fight. His boxing skills were superb. I still think it's amazing how a guy who started out as a middleweight could move up to heavyweight and hang in there(and in my mind beat) a big, powerful heavyweight like Sam Peter.
Even though James Toney is way overweight at 230+ pounds, he still has a chin and skills...... He has NOT looked great as a heavyweight; he has been sub-par for the most part.... But, he's still a solid top-12 contender in 2009..... The dude is well on his way to the H.O.F. after he retires........ Cheers.... MR.BILL
I'm one of the few on ESB who scored this one the same way as 2 of the judges. thought Peter won it fair and square.
I was so mad after hearing the scorecards, James was going to make history and they took it away from him :/
Yeah, I mean since he moved up to heavy: Holyfield - Good win, great performance Booker- Legit win, dominated but probably expected a stoppage. Ruiz - Wins, declared no contest because of positive drug test. Guinn - Decent enough win, comfortable. Rahman - Unlikely draw, probably lucky not to lose. Peter I - SD, probably won. Peter II - More comprehensive loss, but goes the distance with a noted puncher. Batchelder - SD win against a very low level contender. Rahman - TKO2 win, changed to no contest. Oquendo - SD win, but clearly lost.
Yup, my point exactly. I think dominating Guinn like he did is extremely impressive, but maybe that's just me.
