    More than 40 unanswered punches.

More than 30 seconds where Jones failed to throw a punch or move away from danger.

    End of story.

He was blocking punches very well, and Green wasn't letting him move away from danger. Green trapped him in a corner and was physically just a bigger man at that weight. That doesn't mean the fight was over, because Green never hurt him again after that one punch knocked him down.

For me it's not enough to stop a fight of this level on a dubious reason like the fighter didn't respond in 30 seconds. Yes normally thats reason to stop a fight, but usually the ref tells the fighter to fight back. Did you hear the ref say this?

The ref was English and believe me there is NO way he would do an Aussie fighter favours if that's what you're suggesting.
Did you not see the flush uppercuts Roy took as well?

  5. Yeah, youd rather wait until theyre laying prostrate on the floor unconscious. Personally im glad that most referees dont subscribe to your strain of thought.

It was a little premature, IMO.

I think the ref wasn't going to stop the fight just yet, but after he saw Roy's short chicken dance after the break up, he got too concerned.

Exactly what I thought, apart from I thought it was the correct decision. There is no point in letting him be put to the sword. The KD was a big KD, he had over 30 seconds and his brain still hadn't managed to connect with his legs.

This isn't the 1950's, you dont literally have to knock the other guys head off from his neck to mandate a stoppage and for good reason.

If you sit on the ropes and take that many unanswered punches, without showing any effort to slip them with wobbly legs and a prior KD you are on ***** street and eligible to be stopped. Simply holding your hands to your head doesn't qualify as adequate defence

    Wrong.

RJJ landed 2 jabs in 2 minutes - see 0:59 and 1:27 and that was it. The rest didn't land, or hit Green's glove.

RJJ threw nothing after the KD, he just shelled up and Green worked him, landing several bodyshots and 4 heavy uppercuts that rocked RJJs head back, the last one sending RJJ back against the ropes again and promopting the ref to call it off.

    Watch and learn :deal

You've been reduced to arguing semantics and picking up on typos.

The rulebook states- a referee has the right to stop the fight if the fighter is no longer "intelligently defending himself". Curling up into a ball and hiding on the ropes does not qualify as intelligent defence. Sure- roy lies on the ropes and does this defence all the time with safety- but to view this alone denies context. In roys case it became clear after the clinch break - he had not recovered balance or full co-ordination. It was the safe call- and ultimately the wise call.

    Sure :
    1. Roy COULD have recovered between rounds, bought more time- and made his way back into the fight after a few minutes.
    2. BUT Danny COULD ALSO have kept on for another 30 seconds- and eventually landed the big right that could have ruined roys future.

Of those two possiblities - the ref weighed all factors and went with the most likely- and decided to take the safer path. At a guy like Roys age, with all the punishemnet he has taken after a long career- all it would take is one clean concussion to really give him permanent damage.
The brain is most vulnerable when its already been shocked once- the second concussion is the most damaging long term. A guy can get hit once- and be ok- but if he s wobbly and takes another? thats the one that causes brain damage- with no defences , no senses alert- nothing to brace the impact.

Referees today are trained to resist the crowds urge for blood, and to deny instinct- and stop a fight at this point. we ve seen it in corrales, castillo for example. If anything- the stoppage was an unpopular decision in the arena- the hometown wanted a fight- and a clean KO, they were happy for the win, but unsatisfied at the method. The referee is to be applauded for doing what so many referees dont have the balls to do, such as in cotto, pacquiao s fight.

its a bit stupid really- these monday morning quarterbacks who half the time deride a "premature" stoppage and the other half complain that a ref wasnt merciful.

As others have said- take a deep breath and swallow. accept . roy could . so should you.
