So if Duran beat Joppy when they fought, would his legacy have been made greater? Yes. Would Joppy's stock go down? Yes.

    Of course it makes sense.

I know you may think "there are no comparisons with Duran/Joppy" but there because, as I said, Pacquiao's legacy is set in stone already. When a boxer gets to that stage, it can only go up. Mayweather doesn't have that safety net.

Not at all. I think Pacquiao will win but if he loses? It doesn't change anything.

Manny has a better resume at the moment, which is simply down to Barrera and Morales being better than Castillo and Corrales.

There isn't a lot in it.

If Mayweather wins the H2H, he should be ranked higher, and considered the better fighter.

of course, it changes everything if pac loses.

The whole bases of *******s argument is pac is a better fighter than floyd.

They both have moved up in weight and are now both currently in the same weight class.

If Mayweather convincingly beats him there is no way in hell pac remains above him as a better fighter.

If your argument is Pac has a better resume after the lost then yes your right. If your argument is pac is a better fight then you would be dead wrong.

They are both true greats. Let's get that established.

However, at the very top, it comes down to styles more than pure ability. If Mayweather wins, is he better? Not nessecarily 'better' but he has the edge in styles. I think the Pacquiao of the Diaz fight would batter prime Castillo convincingly, whereas Mayweather didn't have it easy either time.

Styles truly do make fights. These guys are both great and whoever wins may actually be the best boxer, we won't know. One thing we will know is that stylistically, one has the edge.

  8. You can't act like it doesnt matter AT ALL if Manny loses. Of course it matters. Just far more drastically for Floyd than PAC.

wrong. duran is rated higher than hagler and leanord yet they beat him. its the guy that dares to be great that gets them where they are. plus pacs resume will still sh#t all over floyds. flyweight to welter 7 weights and an armstrong-easque year 130-135-140-147.

Oh, yeah, you can then make a case for more defensive fighters beating Pacquiao in fantasy match-ups, you may even drop him a few places in the ATG lists but does it make any significant difference? I don't think so.

    Totally agree.

  12. Ya fair enough. Only thing I will add is that if it's a brutal smackdown that WILL make quite a difference. But that's highly unlikely to happen. I believe almost certainly (due to Floyd's style) this fight will go to the cards and be reasonable close. If that happens it might not really affect either guys overall legacy too much. If (on the odd chance) Manny smacks Floyd down Floyd will just revert to being considered one of the greatest junior lightweights of all time..his whole career at welter will be seen as fraudulent.

ATG are based on achievements just like you said. But Manny didn't achieve much because of the advantages he enjoyed in practically all of his fights. Robinson, Duran, Johnson, Leonard, Ali, Louis and all the other all-time greats never asked for catchweights. Or to have their opponents so weight-drained before the fight. Manny Pacquiao will not go down as an ATG just because he beat a few old, washed up fighters in Barrera, Morales and DeLaHoya.

Plus the fact that Oscar was so weight-drained that it was actually dangerous for him to have been in the ring with an amateur. Cotto came off of a very close fight and a knockout loss before his fight against Manny.
Barrera and Morales were both past it but still somewhat effective. David Diaz was just a glorified amateur.

To be great you must defeat a great without any advantages. There are evidence of Low confidence (asking for weight advantages), evidence of a controlled substance (being staggered by lighter fighters who aren't big punchers (Marquez and Morales and able to withstand a heavier fighter's heavier punches (Cotto)

Manny Pacquiao stanks to me as a fighter. I do like his supposed humbleness, but the guy is no saint. He have a dick like the rest of us=cheated on his wife.

Manny couldv'e fought Nate Campbell, Joan Guzman, Timothy Bradley or any of the more deserving champions instead of a Diaz or a shot and drained DeLaHoya. Just saying.
