Wondering what everyones thoughts on Regional Titles are? It would make sense that regional title holders would be top contenders, but in most cases, they are not. Would you like to see the regional titles be more meaningful in relation to title shots and rankings? Example: Joe Cruiserweight comes up to heavy, and two fights later, has a shot at a world title. Wouldn't winning a Regional Title before being considered for a title shot be more fair and meaningful? :think
Yeah. I always feel British boxers who have held the Commonwelath, British and European titles deserve a world title shot (e.g. Lennox Lewis vs Razor Ruddock or Andy Holligan vs Julio Cesar Chavez). I mean plenty of british regional title holders nowadays on sky sport saturday fight nights win them in around 10 pro fights against these tought guys from Ghana. One example for me of a regional title holder, with world class skills, deserving a shot is Jamie Moore
Here is as bad a example as you will find. http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=5065&cat=boxer So Morales won the NABF title against someone who was 0-1. If you see this guy getting a title shot after this you would wonder why. However this does not show the full story- in this case how amazing Morales was.
meh, In the UK they are well regarded and well maintained. In North America they are little more than trinkets with most elite boxers not bothering to hold them on their way up. And now with the IBO making a powergrab, more boxers are steering away from the regional belts in the US and trying to get an IBO world title.
The NABF and USBA titles used to be very important. An NABF title win followed by a couple defenses virtually guaranteed a WBC world title shot. The USBA title held the same status for the WBA. Those days are long gone.
I think its a shame that fake world belts get chosen over what ciould legitamate regional and national belts, especially in the US where the population of boxers is so large. We still regard the British and European titles as legitamate straps, but these have been diluted to mere stepping stones for prospects and with all the inter continental and international belts, some fighters dont even bother with them here. The standard of fighter going for the commonwealth title is embarrasing half the time.
the problem is the European title and the National belts in Europe are the only ones that can be taken seriously along with the Asian belts. There is no North American title or US title. would be great if there was.
it is one advantage that english fighters have other others. they get a good apprenticeship because regional titles mean a lot over here. british-commonwealth-european it gives a good grounding and gives good experience at gradualism of opponents level. it answers questions domstically and sets up a big fight on the world scene. it annoys me when boxers from our shores try shortcutting it i.e. khan
Works both ways though, we've had guys boxing for domestic titles for far too long and make the jump to world title level too late. Khan will be remembered as a world champion now not former commonwealth champion...
Actually, there are North American straps. See below: After a little Wiki-research, I learned that the following groups have national titles: WBO Affiliated organizations * North American Boxing Organization (NABO) * WBO LATINO (LATINO) * WBO Asia-Pacific Transition of WBO titles * WBO world champions * WBO Asia Pacific champions * WBO Inter-Continental champions * WBO Latino champions This content is protected Regional Organizations * North American Boxing Council * Commonwealth Boxing Council Champions WBA affiliated organizations * FEDELATIN * Pan Asian Boxing Association (PABA) * European Boxing Association (EBA) * North American Boxing Association (NABA) Transition of WBA titles * WBA world champions * WBA international champions * WBA Fedecentro champions * WBA Fedelatin champions * WBA Pan African champions * WBA female world champions IBF Transition of IBF titles * IBF world champions * IBF Inter-Continental champions * IBF Mediterranean champions * IBF Pan Pacific champions * IBF North American champions Note: The IBF is preceded by the United States Boxing Association (USBA), a regional championships organization like the NABF, NABC and NABA. In the WBA's elections, the president of the USBA, lost in his bid to become WBA president. He and others withdrew from the convention and decided to organize a new world-level organization. USBA, United States Boxing Association, is the national title related to IBF. WBC The WBC has nine regional governing bodies affiliated with it, such as the North American Boxing Federation (NABF), the Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF), the European Boxing Union (EBU) and the African Boxing Council (ABC). Founded in 2001, it can be traced back to its predecessors, the World Boxing Syndicate (WBS) and the World Boxing Empire (WBE). In 2005,the United States Boxing Council (USBC) became affiliated with the WBE,and then WBE was renamed as World Professional Boxing Federation (WPBF) on July 6, 2006. Transitions of WPBF & USBC titles * WPBF World Title * WPBF Internationally Title * WPBF International Title * WPBF Youth World Title * WPBF Americas Title * WPBF Asia-Pacific Title * WPBF African Title * WPBF Womens World Title * USBC Title
thats the problem in europe you have one champ.there should be one us title and one north american title.the american comission could learn from the british one and start doing their own rankings and belt
So you're saying I should knock out the top *****, and THEN start taking down the africans and central americans? I'll be knocking on Senchenko's door before he knows what's going on:think
No atsch I was just showing that each sanctioning body is affiliated with several regional titles. The discussion is about prospects coming up nationally and winning a regional title before moving to a world title.
