How big were the gloves? 6oz.(?)....Compared to today, I think in Nevada it's 10oz for 135lb and up...Not sure on New Jersey ?

Based on the newspaper articles I read in Max Baer's day, in the mid-late 1920s, Jack Dempsey was using 5 oz. gloves and by the mid-1930s, Max was using 5 oz. and 6 oz. gloves. In exhibition bouts, they appeared to use 8 oz. gloves, but Max would often insist on 5 oz.-6 oz. gloves.

I suppose if you have good eyes and clear film footage, you could watch bouts from each decade and determine when the gloves started getting larger ?

Here's an interesting story that appeared about changes in the contents of the padding:

    06.08.1933 – p27
    Syracuse Herald
GLOVES IN BIG BOUT TONIGHT ARE PADDED WITH BADGER HAIR
NY June 8.—The six ounce gloves which Max Schmeling and Max Baer will wear tonight at the Yankee Stadium will be padded for the first time with badger hair. Heretofore gloves have been padded with only horse hair, which at times becomes lumpy and knotted. By mixing the horse hair with badger hair it is expected that the padding will be more evenly distributed. The gloves were delivered to Jack Dempsey's office yesterday and each leather mitt weighed exactly six ounces.

    Hope this helps,
