I was referring to rematches where Holyfield stepped up in terms of performance so I left out the Tyson fights. Qawi is a good mention though, Holyfield definitely improved and matured into a full-fledged pro by the time of the rematch. I though he performed really well in the Lewis rematch. I watched that fight quite a few times and I feel like you can make a case that he won. It was night and day in comparison to their initial match which was a near shut out.
So this is weird... I've seen multiple articles online that reference Louis as being 10-0 in rematches, instead of 11-0 - and in fact can not find any that claim that as his true record in rematches, even though it clearly is when you go through and count them up. :blood Was his record incomplete for a while? Did one rematch go unknown about until sometime in the last decade or so? Like, was Louis vs. Ramage II for instance relegated to obscurity and forgotten about until some contemporary archival newspapers turned up or something? I just don't get how so many boxing historians & writers got his record in rematches so wrong for so long. This is basic arithmetic. How can so many sources have cited his record as 10-0 and not 11-0? He fought Lee Ramage in 1934 & 1935 (WTKO8 & WTKO2) He fought Natie Brown in 1935 & 1937 (WUD10 & WKO4) He fought Max Schmeling in 1936 & 1938 (LKO12 & WKO1) He fought Bob Pastor in 1937 & 1939 (WUD10 & WKO11) He fought Arturo Godoy twice in 1940 (WSD15 & WTKO8...) He fought Buddy Baer in 1941 & 1942 (WDQ7 & WKO1) He fought Abe Simon in 1941 & 1942 (WTKO13 & WTKO6) He fought Billy Conn in 1941 & 1946 (WKO13 & WKO8...) He fought Jersey Joe Walcott in 1947 & 1948 (WSD15 & WKO11) He fought Cesar Silverio Brion in 1950 & 1951 (WUD10 twice) He fought Omelio Agramonte twice in 1951 (both WUD10) I mean, this isn't me not being able to count - those bullet points are numerated. ELEVEN. So, WTF? :think
:rofl Here is what I mean: http://coxscorner.tripod.com/alilouis.html http://www.boxing.com/baer_vs._louis_fate_takes_a_hand.html http://www.ringsideboxingshow.com/BIOJoeLouisIBHOF This content is protected atsch
Oh I knew what you meant! My guess is it was like a game of telephone, or whatever that was called, and when one early source got the numbers wrong, newer lazier sources went with a previous claim, without bothering to verify. At least that's the only reason I can think of that seems plausible. But some mysteries are better left unsolved. :smoke
Speaking of Hagler, btw, vis-a-vis this subject: He went 12-0-1 (11) with the only non-KO win a DQ, in rematches. Ray Seales - draw in rematch, TKO1 in rubber match. (1-0-1, 1) James Redford - TKO2 in rematch. (2-0-1, 2) Dornell Wigfall - KO6 in rematch. (3-0-1, 3) Jimmy Owens - DQ6 in rematch. (4-0-1, 3) DC Walker - TKO6 in rematch. (5-0-1, 4) Willie The Worm Monroe - TKO12 in rematch, TKO2 in rubber match. (7-0-1, 6) Kevin Finnegan - TKO7 in rematch. (8-0-1, 7) Boogaloo Watts - TKO2 in rematch. (9-0-1, 8..) Fulgencio Obelmejias - TKO8 in rematch. (10-0-1, 9) Vito Antuofermo - RTD4 in rematch. (11-0-1, 10) Mustafa Hamsho - TKO3 in rematch. (12-0-1, 11) Oddly, there seems to be the same errant reporting of his record in rematches, as I have seen it cited as 10-0-1 (9). :huh Why can nobody count?!?
IB, if you get the chance, check out my Ward-Barrera preview and let me know. Or if you don't have time, give me your early thoughts on that one. I haven't seen any posts by you that I can recall on that subject. That's not to say you haven't posted on it, but if you have, I haven't seen it and am most curious to hear your thoughts. :smoke
Put it this way - I don't think a rematch will be necessary! Ward UD12. :deal Now, as for the Kovalev vs. Ward match-up this is supposed to set table for... :scaredas: Tough one to pick and could very well turn into a multiple fight rivalry.
