You're right there. I thought Ali was losing the thrilla in Manila before Joe was oddly pulled out, I thought he lost all three Norton fights and yet he came away with two victories and a split decision loss. He did beat Foreman convincingly in the end but it was also yet another very punishing fight where Ali absorbed tons of punishment and basically had Foreman beat him until exhaustion. Foreman smoked Joe twice in dominant fashion and smashed Norton like it was nothing. The fact he came back to win the lineal and unified heavyweight titles at 45 is obscene. I personally think he's the best of that era h2h.
I remember after Ali lost to Spinks, Norton said he wanted Spinks. Foreman and Frazier both announced they were coming back and wanted Spinks. And Ali was quoted in a paper somewhere that Norton wants Spinks but won't fight Foreman again or Frazier. Frazier wants Spinks but doesn't want to fight Foreman again or Norton. Foreman wants Spinks but won't fight me again. And Ali said I'm the only who will fight all of them. And he did beat all of them. He's the only one who beat all of them.
I'm not sure you'll get much disagreement, from a logical perspective of you win a tough fight or nick a win and know you could get done in the rematch, then unless there's some controversy to your win, then why go there
What agenda are you tryiing to advance here? A Champ taking a worth challenger makes even less. The chicken or the egg? Wtf?
People usually rematch because rematches generate more money, or if there is bad blood between the combatants. Seems like Hearns vs Hagler II would've made an absolute killing so I dont know why there was never a rematch. However, Pacquiao wouldnt have made much more than he would against any other fighter by rematching Horn and enough people saw it as a robbery that nobody ever called for one
I think it shows good sportsmanship when the new champ gives the vanquished champ the rematch. Kinda like, you gave me a shot at your title, I'll give you a chance to win it back.
I'd like to see boxing follow UFC, in which title fights are longer than regular fights. 15 rounds vs 12 rounds. That would have made it more clear of who was more deserving Loma or Teo. I thought Teo won, but another 3 rounds and Loma could have easily won. Title fights were more exciting when I was growing up. You could never really count anyone out until the bell sounded.
