I'm thinking Spinks-Qawi 2 here, Castillo-Corrales 3 and Sanchez-Laporte 2....any other cases like that?
- Klitshko vs Fury rematch was scheduled to take place in U.K, before Fury "allegedly" twisted his ankle. - Jake Lamotta vs Marcel Cerdan rematch was scheduled, but Cerdan was killed in plane crash, while flying to U.S. - Alfredo Escalera vs Tyrone Everett rematch was signed I believe. Everett was murdered. - Salvador Sanchez vs Juan Laporte II. Another tragic story, with Sanchez killed in an accident. - Tim Witherspoon vs Tony Tubbs II - They were suppose to fight in December of 86, or so I read. Tubbs pulled out with shoulder injury and James "Bonecrusher" Smith stepped in for him. - In 2012 two rematches were cancelled because of failed drug-tests - Victor Ortiz vs Andre Berto (They fought again eventually, couple years later) and Lamont Peterson vs Amir Khan.
Yeah that was hours from happenng1 i remember as a 10 year old watching on HBO and being disappointed when Barry Tompkins said the fight wasn't going to take place.
Hagler-Hearns. They put both of them on the same to build up the rematch. Hagler fought Mugabi and Hearns fought Shuler. Then SRL came along
Madison Square Garden tried to put a double-header together in May of '65. It would be the 4th fight between Dick Tiger and Joey Giardello and a 12 round rematch between Floyd Patterson and George Chuvalo. The card never came off, Tiger met Joey at a later date and Floyd and George never got together for a rematch.
Oh yeah that and Camacho-Rosario 2 in the 90s. Camacho-Rosario 2 even had a set date at the Roberto Clemente Coliseum in San Juan. Leonard-Duran 4 was being announced at Sportscenter in 1993 or 1994 as for Sydney, Australia at the Sydney opera House, I believe. Thank God it didn't happen. Medicine companies were probably also thankful for that, because their sleeping pill sales would have gone down as people wouldn't need them on the day of the fight, they'd just watch the fight and zzzzzz.
There was negotiations for an immediate Holyfield-Foreman rematch in 91’, before that fell apart and Tyson-Holyfield was scheduled for November 91’. https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1991-10-03-sp-4449-story.html I thought it was a little weird at the time. Holyfield-Foreman was a good fight but not one that you really cared to see a rematch. It may have been just leverage from Holyfield’s team in negotiations with Tyson’s team, but it seems like it ended up costing them money.
