Remember him. He now lives in Texas and works on a milatary base as a janitor for the 3 to 11 shift. He has stated his trainers under Ray Leonard tried to turn him into a "boxer" rather than a puncher who threw numerous punches per round so his career did not go as well as planned. Andrew was slightly short on amateur experience as well. Also fighting as heavyweight he was just too "small"....it is fun to hear what fighters are up to nowadays. I guess money wise he never really cashed in. Best of luck in your retirement A:smokendrew.
One of my favorite Olympians during that time. Guy had a million dollar smile and great personality. Thought he'd be a marketing dream. Sad to hear.
I expected good things from his out of the olympics he was impressive back then.... He dissapointed when he was schooled and kod by Bobby Czyz. Never seemed to go beyond being a fringe contender.
Andrew Maynard was the first boxer I saw in person. He came to my middle school in '92 or '93 and he was a real cool guy. He signed a photo for everybody in the school that wanted one with our names on there...still have mine. He got ko'd or tko'd shortly after that on ESPN2 or something.
One of the few times we'll ever agree, but exactly, there is nothing sad about a man making an honest living. Sadness is a fighter who financially made millions and threw it all away, which btw there are tons of.
Thing which Hearns has over his former opponents Maynard and Barkley is his name recognition. Being an ATG he can do lectures and get paid ok money for just appearances. Barkley and Maynard cannot do that. So Hearns is in a better position. Good for Maynard for doing what he can do. Nothing wrong with being a janitor. Eating is the main thing we all have to do.
