I have no idea of what he is doing now, but I have fond memories of many of his fights. I often watch his fights against Eamonn Loughran (ko1), Campos (rsc5), and his near upsets against Ike Quartey and James Page. He did look a bit soft sometimes, but he could certainly bang. Very good fighter, I hope he is doing well. Woller
Lopez destruction of Yori Boy was very impressive, he battered him into defeat and did so with relative ease. I always though a motivated and well prepared Lopez could have dethroned Trinidad had they fought, Lopez definately had the power and ability to lay some serious hurt on Tito and take him out in a war. He should have gotten the nod over Quartey as well when they met, however he has only himself to blame as he should have stepped on the gas and taken it out of the judges hands which he could have done had he pressed the issue. All in all he was a very good fighter who never fulfilled his potential due to outside the ring distractions.
He was very strong, tough, and could hit like hell. Outside of that though, he was somewhat limited and had a tendency to be lazy/tentative. His best performance that I remember was his stoppage of a well regarded (at the time) Yori Boy Campas. Against Quartey for the title, he was tentative through the early and middle rounds and allowed Quartey to pile up points simply with his jab. Lopez finally opened up in the late rounds and had Quartey absolutely out on his feet, and that enabled him to pull out a draw (although many people still thought Quartey's early lead should've given him the decision). Still, watching that fight, you couldn't help but think, "If only he'd stepped it up just a little sooner..." After his embarrassing upset loss to Page, I don't remember much about him. Believe I heard he had made or was planning a comeback not too long ago.
...his destruction of loughran back in the day was an eye opener the lad had a decent chin as well considering the bangers that he faced
HUGE waste of talent. Lopez was a huge puncher, with good offensive skills and a rock hard chin. He slaughtered Campas like no one else did, and he had Quartey damn near out in the 11th round. Then he choked against James Paige, and after that fell off the map. Dude just wasnt dedicated enough, and wanted to smoke weed and surf more than he wanted to train.
Yes.. the version of Lopez that beat Campas, and nearly beat Quartey, would KO both Cotto and Marg. But if the version that lost to James Page showed up... then Cotto and Marg could win.
