He was always down to earth. He had a brief period after retiring where he was on drugs and what not, his interviews became more arrogant. He's over that now as far as I can tell.

JJ, I always get a kick out people that overrate how he beat Kessler, it was actually a pretty close fight. Never was a fan but I have grown to dislike the guy with his overzealous fan base. At one point I disliked Bhop and RJJ more but their fans are not as wacky and do not make **** threads like this one:bart

Thing get forgotten quick. People got short memories. The super middle division that time was burning hot. Lacy was touted as hell an was considered the favorite by so many people. what happened? he lost... Kessler at the time was such a feared supper middle. what happened? he lost? all of a sudden there hype jobs... please lol. Calzaghe is the greatest supper middle ever

I rate him as the best SMW ever mainly due to his Longevity in the division but it is one of the newer divisions to begin with. He was not the best fighter to ever fight in the division there are atleast 5 guys on that list. I do not think Kessler was ever considered a hype job but it was no annihilation or a whitewash. Lacy, was a hype job and a bum there is no one who will dispute that fact.

    Annihilated?

Nah. Outflurried him down the stretch to win a very competitive fight, after losing the first third of the fight.

Still, an extremely good performance from Joe C against a genuinely top class opponent.

The only fight of Calzaghe's career where his performance (taking opposition into account) seriously impressed me.

The way he beat a few other guys (Lacy, Sheika) was also impressive, but they were mediocrities. Kessler wasn't a world-beater (as Ward proved), but he was very good nonetheless.

    lots of excuses in here

How is 117-111 even remotely close of a fight? That's called a schooling, and kessler is a solid fighter.

Not to mention, JC was 7 years older ( I believe 36? ) and 2 inches shorter

he actually is a pretty cool dude, his fans are just ****ing idiots.
he is funny too...i remember watching a doc on him and it was winter time , he was inside in the gym working up a sweat, walks outside for a second and his body heat mixed with the cold air caused alot of steam like smoke to come off him , and he looks at the camera and says "smokin joe"
(guess you had to be there)

Annihilated? No. Annihilated is Maywather-Gatti, Mayweahter-Hernandez, Mosley-Margarito, Hopkins-Tarver, Ward-Kessler, etc. Kessler was competitive and won some rounds.

Also, Annihilated is what Lewis did to the brains of Klittards by beating Vitali.
