Remember when so many were saying UFC>Boxing

Tonight's UFC card was actually very strong. Action from top to bottom. Of the 8 or 9 fights I saw, PPV and Preliminaries. I think only 2 went the distance.

 

A good business model is one that is sustainable over the long run. UFC never had that. UFC's business model was short term and dependent on creating a star or two every few years. They had that when they had Silva, GSP and Lesnar but now they are left with Rousey and...erm...err.... If you're doing PPV you need someone to headline every show and there is no way the UC have enough "names" to do that with.

You're right that when it's at it's peak it's awesome. The best UFC fights are fantastic but they seem to come around less and less frequently whilst PPV's seem more frequent. The demand has gone up but the supply of good fights has remained the same or dropped. Again not a great business model and not something that "worked to scale".

Boxing, for all it's divisions, seems to throw us an exciting, interesting or inspiring curve ball every week or so. The divisions may "**** us off" but they actually add scale to the sport in some ways by allowing more "top fighters" to be in or around the top of their division. UFC could learn from that IF done properly. But they will still need a "star" to come from somewhere, just like boxing does right now.

 

I remeber UFC 100 was so hyped is it was nuts! I think they actually did a mil buys...Went down hill from there.

I heard the card Jones was gonna fight one only got like 20k buys...WOW..

the sport peaked a year or 2 ago now its slowly settling... it seems like UFC has just as much casual fans as boxing does and just like casual fans dont appreciate a pure sweet science boxer casual fans dont seem to understand and appreciate ground work (i like UFC and i understand how much is involved in ground work but because i dont practice it much myself i dont find myself to interested in UFC)

 

More entertainment on tonights ufc card than mayweathers last 5 ppvs, ufc knows how to put on a good card unlike boxing which usually shits on the fans.

Is that why there are more mma gyms in vegas now than boxing gyms, mma is the fastest growing sport on the planet..

I've loved boxing & mma for a long time, started watching mma properly around 04/05 with freakshow Japan events in Pride... never did I think mma will overtake boxing even around 07-08 when a lot of hype was around the ufc was coming and apparently boxing was fading

mma will always a be niche sport, It peaked many years ago around 2009, it's not growing and has stopped in the US/Canada, the big superstars are leaving and they cant build with the rest despite delusional comments coming from Dana acting like Ronda/Weidman/McGregor are superstars. They are trying to hit/revive some of the old markets but nothing can really be done.. China/Japan, even in Brazil its hit its slope

With large amount of cards being shown now the ufc cards are getting less stacked and people are losing interest, in Europe people are slowly fading away because the cards that are coming on are not worth staying up till 5am for and the results and not worth chasing up to watch replays off

I definitely see Zuffa selling the ufc by 2018 the latest, if they sell around 2017 they will a better deal if they were to sell around 2020 because the damage will be done by then

 

Brian Kenny had the best comment actually when he said MMA was not "aesthetically pleasing," when it got into all that rolling around on the ground ****. I would go further and say it's downright BORING to watch.

It certainly takes skill. But no amount of dressing this dull **** up with macho WWE-style marketing is going to cover up the fact that when these fights hit the ground, it's like watching paint dry. :nod

Fastest growing is a VERY misleading statement. A sport growing from 10 competitors to 100 competitors is incredibly "fast growing" with a growth figure of 1000%...but in reality it's still a miniscule number.

 

The problem with MMA is that it's not sustainable.

It's too hard on their bodies. The wrestling and kicks to the legs do too much long term damage. You can't create any stars because they're too beat up by the time they get on a winning streak.

Look at Jon Jones. He's getting injuries left and right.
