Who remembers this great fight? Man what a thriller. This was the fight that made Martinez more popular, despite losing. I personally thought Martinez won 7-5. Became a Maravilla fan ever since. Makes me wish that we saw that Martinez against Cotto.

this martinez would destroy cotto..i had martinez winning a close fight on that one.

for the current cotto and martinez, i picked cotto to win due to martinez age, inactivity, and his injuries..looks like most of those who predicted this were correct too.

    Great fight.

Sergio jumping on the world stage with both feet.

I actually had Williams 115-113(IIRC), but it truly could have gone either way.

The one judge who had it 119-111, or some other diabolical score along those lines, should be embarrassed for that card.

I had it 114-114. Very good fight. That one scorecard that had Sergio winning just 1 round was ridiculous.

Another thing, it's funny to me how long-time boxing fans/broadcasters like Max Kellerman and Jim Lampley still don't understand the 10 point must system and 9-9 rounds.

How hard is it to understand? One fighter has to have 10 points. It can only go to 9 if you take a point away for fouls (or that dumb WBC rule about headbutts).

i took notice 2 fights before that when he fought alex bumena. great performance. then he should have had a ko against cintron...but was robbed of that.

great fighter...with a very respectable string of wins. he should have been a bigger star in the sport but his loyalty to a regional promoter cost him that stardom and bigger pay days.

still shocked he only got 2 mil for the cotto fight. smh.

We have to stop pretending Williams was Tommy Hearns. Both Williams and Sergio were never on Cotto's level. Ever.

No you can continue to kid yourselves about the past but Cotto wrecks ANY version of Sergio. I think you need to watch Sergio getting KO'd by slow ass, soft tough pre plaster Margarito before you start hypin him up again.

you have to stop pretending like you know what you're talking about. no one is claiming williams to be tommy but he certainly would have beat cotto. margarito turned down the rematch with sergio. sergio at 147 would have given cotto hell.

I had Paul Williams winning by 1 point (9-9 or 10-10 first round with the double KD's, then Paul winning 6 of the final 11)...

What an amazing fight. I thought it was the FOTY over Marquez/Diaz I.

I hate how there is a sentiment that Sergio was robbed. Yes, one of the scorecards was utter ****. But if you take that away, Williams still takes a MD. And it certainly was a close fight.

Williams would have whooped Cotto. Possibly stoppage at 147, and on points at 154. Too high a work rate, too good of feet. He would have boxed circles around Cotto.
