Anyone remember this fight between Sergio Martinez and Kermit Cintron? That was a fight where Martinez not only should have won easily but he was also robbed of a well deserved KO but for some reason it ends with a draw. If you thought Tank vs Roach was bad with the ref failing to call a knockdown with Tank going down on a knee and having the fight scored a draw then you'll be shocked with this disgraceful outcome. Sergio was such an exciting fighter to watch. Skillful despite his awkwardness, and didn’t mind going to war when needed! Was definitely one of my favorite of that era.
Oh boy one of the controversies to close out HBO boxing like: ) Laurence Cole telling Marquez “you’re ahead on points” when the dr was going to check his cut 2) Arthur Mercante Jr stopping Foreman vs Cotto just to restart it 3) Cintron vs Williams debacle 4) Carlos Molina getting disqualified against James Kirkland this one was terrible because Martinez knocked him out and won the decision, but somehow got robbed with a draw I am curious to watch this back because I’m curious to see what the referees justification was for not stopping it
I just referenced this on the Tank excuse thread, because I think Cintron declared that the product in Sergio's hair made him woozy, or something like that. One of boxing's most likable got this treatment against one of boxing's biggest doofuses of the time. A talented doofus but a doofus. Some very insane ref stuff happened when they couldn't instant replay it. But, fantastically, by the era where they could...some also very insane ref stuff happened. Mares/Agbeko was another where I could've easily lost my temper if I were there in person. And that's why I watch from home and ruefully joke about it. Safer for everybody!
I remember that match very well, it wasn't a robbery against Martinez, it was two! A truly disgusting, these things kill sports
