Napoles was flawless in that fight - between 1969 and 1970 he was the best fighter in the world. And I think Griffith was on his game as well. One of the best examples of one ATG dominating another ATG.

Wouldn't it be fair to say though, that Griffith was pretty badly weight-drained in that fight? I mean, he HAD been campaigning at 160 for a while by 1969.

Not to say Napoles wouldn't have beaten him anyway, welterweight prime-for-prime, I think he would have. Just wondering how much different it would have gone.

Here's my summary of the fight where I ask pretty much the same question:

Fellas, I'll try and get back to you. The book I'm reading on Griffith supposedly has the answers to his weight drains and training struggles at this time.

From what I remember, Griffith just couldn’t get out of first gear. Napoles didn’t really, either, but that seemed to be by design so as not to take unnecessary risks against the bigger, stronger man. He just patiently outboxed him all night long.

From what I understand this might not have been the best version of Griffith , but I rate Napoles very highly at 147 pounds. He'd beat a lot of great welters.

Griffith was now a past-his-prime veteran. His 'prime' could not reasonably last past his victory over Nino Benvenuti.

I don’t really think he was past his prime. On the back end of it, but not past it. He still had 2-3 strong years at Middleweight left ahead of him. He simply wasn’t a Welterweight anymore, and he inexplicably drained himself to 144.5 for this one.

That's true, but I would prefer to think of him as post-prime from '68 to the end of his career.

Who knows what he did to get blocked - I just had a look through his last few posts and couldn't see anything obviously problematic with them.

That's a real shame - he contributes nothing but goodness to the site and is one of the best posters on here imo. Hopefully he's back posting soon!
