Recently, it seems like talking about a certain red-head brings up mentions of old fights and talks about robberies. So just for learning history, this reminded me about a different robbery. One involving a certain Cuban who fought that red-head and his fight against a lesser known Mexican by the name of Carlos Molina. On March 25, 2011 live on ESPN Friday Night fights... some guy named Erislandy Lara was awarded a gift (robbery) split-decision draw in a fight against Molina. Two blind judges scored it 95-95, with the judge that actually watched the fight scoring it at 97-93 for Molina. Virtually all media outlets, fans in attendance and even ESPN's own poll had the fight scored for Molina. Except of course Teddy who needed to score it a draw lol Final Punch States had Molina landing 142/490 (29%) with 115 being power punches. Lara landed a total of 103/566 (18%) with only 65 of those being power punches. Molina would outland Lara in 8 of the 10 rounds, with one of the other two being a draw. For those interested you can rewatch the fight on Youtube. Carlos Molina would go on to be known for being the victim of multiple ring side robberies. Besides his bout against Lara, he was robbed against Chavez Jr and later Kirkland. Just wanted to share and remind people of some interesting boxing fights from the past. Thoughts?
Molina's still a highly active fighter, with 6 fights in 2020 and 3 more in 2021 so far, in spite of the pandemic.
His career wasnt able to thrive through the whole "failure to register as a sex offender" stuff and being an illegal immigrant who snuck back in after being deported in 2006. I remembered the sex offender stuff but wanted to google to make sure. Didnt realize he was an alien though.
I remember it vividly. I also remember vividly Molina being conveniently DQ'd and savagely robbed of a probable win against James Kirkland, after he took 8 out of 10 rounds off of him. Because his corner got in the ring a second before the bell sounded, but that was down to a knockdown that may not have been an actual knockdown called against him at the bell. Ironically, the ref also missed a potential knockdown scored by Molina against Kirkland that same round. It was an epic cluster****. A travesty Molina was a solid fighter who had a good run that should have had a few more marquee names Not the most exciting nor physically gifted but he could box
