I've said it before and i'll probably say it again, but winning belts in a number of weight classes is often less impressive than staying at one weight and dominating.

Sure, its ok if a boxer out grows his frame, or if they are looking for a better opponent/challenge, but all too often guys will jump up a weight division to poach a weaker title holder. This is commonly used reason to prove boxers are "Great".

That is cherry picking and I think some boxers do it to avoid threats in their division. If a boxer stays in one division and takes on all comers, they are showing more balls and also displaying they are willing to face ANY opponents (and their respective styles). To me thats what boxing is all about.

Even moving up and defeating the top guy in the new division isn't the ideal. Styles make fights and beating just the ONE boxer doesn't prove your better than the no 2,3,4....etc.

    Thoughts?

i agree to a certain extent. IMO Roy Jones had it down packed. He moved through the divisions and ****ed up everyone and then parked at 175 for a while, and then took on a HW

I would like to see Pacquiao stay at LW for the next 2-3 years. Maybe fight against Hatton once but really make his name at LW.

Campbell, Guzman, JMM, Diaz, Casa, Peterson, Katsidis, Khan, etc these would all be great wins.

The thing about staying champ in 1 division is that you have to face mandatories. People will say mandatories are easy fights but imo mandatory fights are high risk and low reward, so i give alot of respect to those who rack them up.

I agree and disagree, it depends on the situation. I always rate resume and opposition on the challenge more than name, so the challenge for the particular fighter and how he succeeds matters to me, if a size difference is massive(Ruiz/Jones), to where other top fighters of Jones' size could not succeed at that, it's an awesome win over a limited larger opponent.

But in the case of Mayweather's 140-154, it wasn't as big a deal as would have been facing true elite's at his natural size, even though not many of those were around when he was there.

Last, some guys bodies are just better for it and some do grow out of it. Too much is made on Pac starting at 112, when he is so large now he can barely make 130 without being weight drained and can't even begin to make 126 anymore.... does that sound like even a 122 pounder? Nah, Pac's a decent sized 126-130 pounder now at 135.

something about that though. When Pacquiao moved up to face Barrera for the lineal title at 126, Roach said in a pre-fight interview that Pacquiao was still making 122 easily, and that he would probably move back down to 122 right after. Instead Pacquiao moved up to 130 about 15 months later and took on Morales at the new weight. That is very impressive.

It depends. Moving up and down for one or two fights is ridiculous, I agree.

Campaigning at one, then moving up for a few years etc is different.

I agree though. One or 2 fights in a weight class is far from proving you are the best in that weight class.

Clearing out a division and then defending it a few times is far more impressive to me. (If you can do both though, that's when you're a true superstar)

I think boxers get more recognition if they capture world titles at different weight divisons than staying at one weight defending their title 20x. The picture of holding 4 or more belts in your arms is just sweet.

And also instead of moving back down to 122 after the Barrera fight, which he could have done easily, Pacquiao took on JMM, a career 126 lb fighter and one of the most avoided fighters at the time, not even 6 months later

I agree UNLESS you're moving to a more dangerous division, like Floyd moving to Welterweight and fighting Judah, say what u want about Zab, but I respect anybody that fights him.

Your favourite boxer neither moved weight or dominated his division for over a decade and more!

Its often harder these days to get 4 belts at one weight than 4 belts at 4 weights.

    Completely agree.

However, if you are referring to pac-hatton then I actually think that fight is much better than any of the ones he could otherwise make so that fight would not be cherry picking.

I agree with your argument that it all depends on who you fight. If the best and toughest fight is where you are then stay - if the toughest fight is one up then up (if you have proven yourself where you came from).

    For sure.

Mora, Sturm, Bute would make you three division champion.

Bute, Kessler, Calzaghe would make you unified SMW champion.
