Cotto can fight whoever he wants or whoever the governing body permits him to fight if he wants to keep his belt. That is just a fact.

Yeah there is, happens all the time and I'm sure you've approved many fights with this very logic. Of course you'll play innocent and not admit to it but even if a fighter with a belt you like or respect has just gone through a war all but his most staunchest haters allow him a break fight, that alone makes your statement false.

Well Guerrero (mandatory) and Ortiz (WBC) are probably the worst he's faced since Baldomir, who was also champion... not exactly sugar puffs for your worst 'cherry-picked' opposition. He won't be fighting a soft touch since he barely ever has regardless of the misconceptions. Sure he doesn't seek someone like Golovkin or Martinez but let's be honest only reason they are/were favoured is the ridiculous size difference.

I always measure them by 'what if these were someone else's opponents?' or the context of everyone else's opponents, he usually fights them off their best performances, which is often utterly ignored.

I agree, I'm a Cotto fan and this is a ****ty fight....period. He should either have fought Canelo, or went in against Golovkin or dropped the belt and went back to JMW.

If Cotto doesn't make a mandatory fight after Geale, his title is illegitimate and he should not be recognized as a WBC champ.

Ortiz has dyn-o-mite in both hands and can KO you with either. Ortiz has 5x's the skill as Geale. Victor just has nothing between the ears....

I'm astounded and a little sad that there are so many people defending Cotto over this Geale stuff.

It is sad that todays boxing fan has little standards for lineal champions. They think because of a previous fight they can do what they want when it comes to not shouldering the responsibilities of being a divisions champion. .

Being champion is as much a responsibility as it is anything. Thats what people dont understand.

And its fans that are so quick to support or turn a blind eye to fighters (they happen to be fans of. You can believe in a heartbeat that if it was a fighter they didnt like they would harp non stop about it) perverting the sport that has gotten boxing into the complete mess its in.

Good thread and its nice to still see people trying to speak out for whats right in the sport.

I get the premise but bad example Cotto-Canelo is clearly the bigger more meaningful fight, both have said they have no problem facing GGG after they fight each other, both are fighting better opponents overall than GGG, if the argument is the best fighting the best you'd be for Cotto-Canelo.

People b!tch about Cotto fighting Geale, even though in his second fight at MW Cotto will very well beat GGG's best win. Geale won't even stratch Cottos top 5 win should he come out victories yet its Golovkins best win.

The mandatory thing is also a weak cop out, used by GGG fans. R.Guerrero was a mandatory and was/is more accomplished than GGG how much credit to ppl give Mayweather for that fight.

GGG has never beaten a Champion ever(outside of Geale coincidentally), won a vacant WBA Title and only became a real Champ because the actual WBA Champ moved up, became WBC mando by beating an unranked fighter, and has consistently fought sub par fighters. He hasn't done anything to really warrant a shot over Canelo.

Canelo fights at 154, has never fought at 160. Cotto is the LINEAL 160 "champion". GGG is considered "the guy" 160 by just about everyone.

How do you not see this?

You're talking about Geale not being in Cotto's top 5 wins -- at what weight? Who gives a f* what he did at 140 almost a decade ago. He is the 160 champ NOW, and he hasn't proven s* at MW.

I wouldn't be up in arms about a Cotto - Canelo fight as it is still a great fight, but, I have to agree with what you said in terms of what it means for boxing.

Boxing should be like other sports - what you have done in the distant past should be revered, but it shouldn't have any real relevance on what you do next. Only what you have done in the recent past should have any bearing.

If Cotto is the top guy at MW (and he is due to beating Martinez) then he has to defend that crown against the top challengers at 160. GGG is that man. Yes, he may not have any elite names on his ledger, but considering the elite are avoiding him and he has beat some decent world level/fringe world level guys (Geale, Macklin, etc) then he deserves the shot at Cotto instead of Canelo.

Look at Bute. When all the top SMW's in the Super Six were fighting each other, Bute was busy fighting the calibre of guys that GGG has fought. When the Super Six finished everyone was calling for Ward to fight Bute. No one said the fight shouldn't happen because Bute hadn't fought any elite level guys. GGG should be afforded that same level of recognition.
