Martínez swung himself off balance throwing a wild hook, and upon hitting the canvas did a perfect WWE style kip-up! The crowd ate it up.

Ochoa needs to up his work rate, because it's only a four rounder and his cute arms-down countering might bite him in the ass if the judges aren't feeling it.

Martínez flops on his back and does a kip-up just for funsies after the bell to end the round, too. What a showman!

 

...pushing 200 now. Like to believe I had something to do with that, sharing it here - although none of you feel like commenting along.

 

Wtf? They stopped it? For no discernible reason that I can see. The ref called for a break and sent Ochoa to a neutral corner after Martínez's gum shield was dangling from his mouth. I'd assumed it was to get it replaced, but then Martínez's corner man just casually handed the ref a towel? And the ref looked confused, and then waved it off?

I'm gonna go right ahead and indulge some conspiratorial fantasy about Ochoa being mixed up with the Mexican mafia, with somebody catching a glimpse of the judges' cards and realizing he was in danger of losing to a scrub and "gently suggesting" that Martínez's team screw him over. Makes as much sense as any other explanation here.

 

Note: that wasn't the same Noe Martínez that fought Kiko Martínez and a young Ryan García, if anybody was wondering. That guy is Noe "El Cortito" Martínez Raygoza, retired southpaw super featherweight - also Mexican but from a completely different state (Aguascalientes)

Incidentally, that Noe Martínez, "El Cortito", lost a UD in 2012 against Rafael Rosas Ramírez who is coming up later in our co-main event.

 

Dominic Matthew Barry vs. José Ramón Escobedo Sánchez, 6 rounds @ cruiserweight

 

This one is on BoxRec as Dominic Barry vs. TBA, but they made it a bit easier for me by showing José Ramón Escobedo's name in an onscreen graphic.

Escobedo is 4-4, with all his victories and his losses coming by early KO. He's also 21 years old and debuted in 2020 at middleweight and has climbed up to cruiser in just five years and eight bouts.

He's clearly fodder here for Barry, a native of El Paso, TX, who is 7-0-1 (7) and cut from a slab of granite. Dude's traps look like a comic book character's.

 

Barry is only six foot, so Escobedo must be around 5'9" if that. (unlisted)

It looks like a cruiser versus a somewhat flabby middleweight.

 

Escobedo down twice and waved off.

Barry's third consecutive 1st-round stoppage, fifth overall.

 

Quite a bit of downtime between these bouts...I'm not loving that at this hour.

The first gap was 18 minutes and the next was 13. Averaging more than fifteen minutes per the rest of the night ain't gonna fly.

 

Oh good, here we go, we have whittled it down to just ten minutes.

 

Alex Ochoa vs. Uriel Muñoz, 4 rounds @ lightweight

 

Alex Ochoa is from Texas, and I'm guessing is no relation to Kevin Ochoa from earlier (who's local) - just a coincidental same last name.

I can't find a BoxRec page for an Uriel Muñoz - aaaaand, that's because, as the graphic that just flashed onscreen explains, it's his debut en boxeo profesional.

 

How the hell did Muñoz make weight? He DWARFS Ochoa...who isn't some blown up bantamweight or anything...his two previous bouts were at 134½ and 130¾ lbs.

But just like in the cruiser bout earlier, there's a clear difference of more than a couple of inches. Ochoa is listed at 5'5", so I'm gonna place Muñoz around 5'8½", minimum.

 

Most competitive and exciting fight yet after 2, shame it's already halfway over.

It's been bugging me all night who this old & fat version of Barrera reminds me of...knew it was somebody that I'd seen recently. Just clicked.
