IMO Snipes was an ass hole, a loud mouth.

Here is him after he fought Larry Holmes, he made some valid points, but throwing punches at Larry wasn't in my book, very good sportsmanship:

Snipes was a tough dude. Too bad he was a sore loser.

Although I can certainly appreciate Snipes' frustration, Holmes had him in trouble regardless of his opinion on the stoppage. He was bleeding and Larry had him in a corner landing chopping rights. A few more, and it may have seriously damaged Snipes. The stoppage was a bit premature, but for Snipes to claim " I had him beat " is stretching things very far says I.

I always had a lot of time for Renaldo as a fighter. From Muhammad to Gonzales, he always peeked my interest for some reason.

And although I am probably in a minority of one, I think he was of the few who could of given Tyson a run for his money in 86/87/88...

He could have used a little more class after losing to Holmes. He had a right to argue, but he carried it out like a child. It was funny watching Cosell overdramatasize how poor a moment like that in boxing really was.

    I liked the story about Sammy "the Bull" Gravano sparring with him in Atlas' book;

the Bull says to Teddy Atlas "I always did have more balls than brains" even though nothing could be further from the truth, knowing Renaldo wouldn't dare tag him.

Damn I remember that story being so much more interesting when I read it! LOL

Yep that was very classless... i do wonder why Holmes sort shoved him back with the right hand right after it was stopped. Perhaps that's where it started although Snipes may not remember it.

Holmes was deadly serious when he stated to Cosell he wanted the chance to finish Snipes properly. He as well as Snipes wanted that fight to go on. One thing often overlooked pertaining to Holmes is the simmering rage that one who looks deep can often find in many of his fights. What is very unique is that it wasn't released via serious aggression like a Tyson but more controlled and unleashed when either in trouble or when his opponent was ready to go.

I think a perfect summation would be that Holmes had a sluggers mentally masked inside a boxers style. For those in the relevant countries i will parallel this as to a spinner with a fast bowlers mentality.

Holmes built up many a bad feeling between he and most of his opponents in the pre fight build up. His remarks and comments were often quite low and hit right where it hurt. Barely anyone was exempt. This may be the reason many really did "fight up" vs Holmes. They simply wanted to smash his face in .

A very close inspection will show Holmes followed Snipes,or happened to be right behind him a few seconds after the shove. One wonders if he would have started swinging again if Snipes had squared up to him

Maybe i am starting to ramble :D

Good observation, Holmes, despite his boxer's style, always carried a huge chip on his shoulder. Even when he jabs, it looks like he's trying will all his might to knock out and punish his opponent. :D
If he carried a big punch, i suspect he'd have quite a few Cooney-Norton or Mercer-Morisson stoppages. In the ring he was definitely a bad man.

We're definitely on the same wave. This is one reason i so wanted to see him vs Page, nobody could motivate an opponent like Larry and the animosity between the pair was already at boiling point. Given that Page took the absolute best of Coetzee's right hand and was vastly more talented (MUCH harder hitting and faster) than Snipes it would have been a great match.

One thing Ive noticed is a lot of times a guy who doesn't hit that hard, usually lands one HUGE sunday punch at least once in his career that proves that you truly are always only 1 punch away from winning or losing. IMO the right that Snipes landed here was that sunday punch, but Larry got up, and seemed pissed.

I agree with what you said. IMO the last thing Renaldo wanted was to bring Larry into a brawl out on the streets, or in the ring. Larry never liked it when people ran their mouthes or flat out just won't shut the hell up. Snipes ran his mouth, and wouldn't shut up. Also, you'll see that it looked like Snipes was still going to hit Larry after the ref stopped it, and thats why he shoved Snipes. He didn't like it when people taunted, or it looked like they were gonna keep swining after the bell. He shoved Berbick after the 1st round because Berbick did the same thing. He also shoved "Bonecrusher" Smith during the stare down (a pretty good one acctually). I guess Smith said something that pissed Larry off, or, Larry just doesn't like people making their eyes huge.
