Dee, I love ya' man, but that is bull**** about Holmes ducking Coetzee out of fear....... The duck syndrome was purely political..... Holmes was an "Underpaid" black champion of HIGH skill; yet treated like a buck-tooth stepchild from Don "The" King...... If Larry Holmes had ever fought Gerrie Coetzee prior to 1984, Holmes would've had to agree to purse parity..... Holmes HATED giving the challenger an equal cut in pay...... I fully understand..... NO!! Larry Holmes was NOT Muhammad Ali, but that doesn't mean that Holmes should get jacked around by Don King, either.......... Peace... MR.BILL:bbb
I wish I could agree, but I can't. Even partisan Coetzee fans back home never really thought he could beat Holmes, although we still wanted the fight to come off. Larry was a class above everyone else in the early 80's and although I think Coetzee would have given him some rough moments, I can only ever envision a Holmes win, probably by late stoppage.
Gerrie Coetzee will always be my favourite HW off all time (Hence my name) and the decision of the Snipes fight was a dreadful one. His fight with Weaver I have to say is one of the all time best HW fights. But I agree with most here when they say Coetzee would of lost to Holmes, Gerrie would have a few good early rounds and maybe even give Holmes a bit of trouble, but Holmes would take over and force a 12th round stoppage.
BIG DEE HERE= Who you kidding Larry Holmes was one of the highest paid heavyweight champions in history of the fight game as he made more money than Ali ever dreamed of. Holmes ducked the sucker because of that big right hand that he always was getting tagged with. Anyone who ever hurt Holmes hurt him with right hands over his jab.He ducked more top contenders than any heavyweight champion in history. Ali fought them all while Holmes ducked them as he fought only two No.1 contenders of all his defenses. The others were ranked 5th or lower at the time he fought them. Hell Mike Weaver was ranked 15th in the world when he fought him and HBO wouldn`t pay for the fight so it went to Wide World of Sports so people could see the mismatch which turned out to be Holmes almost getting his ass beat. The only reason the fight came off was because Don King owned the WBC and Jose Sulaman. Do I think Holmes would have won yes I do but he would have been in for a rough night as Coetzee was no Cooney as his best punch was Holmes worst defensive liability and Coetzee took the best punch in the division outside of Tex Cobb at the time. Coetzee was good boxer with a good jab to give Hell and he was as big as Holmes with an equal arm reach. Coetzee fought the guys that Holmes ducked and wouldn`t give title shots. Michael Dokes, Greg Page, Quick Tillis, Pinklon Thomas, John Tate. Coetzee might not have beaten them all but al least he fought them. Holmes padded his record with guys like Alferdo Evangelista, Ossie Ocasio, Lorenzo Zanon, Leroy Jones, Leon Spinks, Scott Frank, Marvis Frazier. The record speaks for itself.
Dee, Larry Holmes was a BIDNESS man... But I don't really think he ever ducked anybody.... Holmes' competition was damn good....... The only guy Holmes refused to fight was Greg Page in 1983 because Don King only was offering Holmes 2.5 million bucks for a non-PPV defense on HBO.... Larry Holmes wanted more, since Page was the # 1 WBC contender at the time.... In 1983, Holmes was slipping a tad, while Greg Page was peaking..... As for Larry Holmes versus Gerrie Coetzee, who the hell knows why the fight fell apart? It was scheduled for June of 1984, but then the promotion fell out....... However, yes, I do recall Larry Holmes saying he would NEVER go to South Africa to fight any white fighter due to politricks...... But, Holmes was willing to kick Coetzee's ass in Las Vegas...... No duck there..... Cheers....... MR.BILL:thumbsup
Gerrie Coetzee has been listed as one of the many people that Holmes ducked on about 2,000,000,000 occasions on this forum regardless of how many times someone tries to point out that the fight never came off because COETZEE backed out of the fight, NOT HOLMES. Yet, it always seems to make for a popular *****....... Kind of similar to a cliche scenario of people jumping off the Canadian falls in a ****ing barrell.....Sounds nastalgic, legendary and makes for good conversation, but isn't something that you actually see or read about people doing....... As a sidenote, there were also legitimate reasons for Holmes never fighting Thomas, Dokes, etc, But the reasons have already been posted here more times than I care to relist....And afterall, why ruin people's fun? It's Christmas time, and I for one still believe in Sante Claus.
Michael Dokes was too connected to the WBA, while Larry Holmes was connected to the WBC, and later, the IBF.... I do NOT recall Dokes screaming for Larry Holmes at any point in time.... Team Dokes was hell-bent on fighting Mike Weaver for the WBA title as early as 1981..... By 1984, Larry Holmes was still a champion, and Michael Dokes was a party animal..... In my book, Holmes NEVER ducked Michael Dokes..... Team Dokes never displayed any real interest in fighting Larry Holmes..... And SCREW Pinklon Thomas..... Thomas let me down...... In 1984 and '85, I thought Pinklon Thomas was the heavyweight of the future.... I thought Pinklon Thomas would win a title belt and make numerous title defenses..... As it turned out, Pinky Thomas fought two real good fights against "Spoon & Weaver" before choking and looking like **** in his title loss to Trevor Berbick in 1986.... After 1986, Pinky Thomas became a human punching bag for the likes of "Tyson, Holy & Bowe." Okay, I do believe that Pinky Thomas finished up his career with several wins---over bums and stiffs, thanks to manager Jackie Kallen...... MR.BILL
Holmes undeniably avoided encounters with Page, Thomas and a Witherspoon rematch. With Carl King looking after Dokes and Don Larry this fight is a non issue. Holmes was definitely not afraid of Coetzee IMO. Despite the big right hand danger Coetzee was just not in Holmes league.
I have to give Thomas credit for the way he turned his life around though. He kicked his heroine habit ( something most people never get over once they're hooked ). He launched a comeback after the brutal loses to Bow and Morrison, and although fought unrated opposition, at least got himself into good health again and repaired his record a tad. Apparently, he's now involved with helping the youth with drug problems.
Yeah, but after his brutal TKO loss to Holy in '88, Pinklon Thomas scored a huge rock of Peruvian Flake and went on a serious binge for about three years before getting his act back together..... Thomas was railing up the lines and crack rocks when he was fighting and losing to "Bowe & Morrison." Jesus, I have never met a dope fiend yet to remain completely sober for life..... They all fall off the wagon here and there..... I know I do / have at times......:admin MR.BILL:rasta
