It's all optics really isn't it? Mayweather made those blocked shots look bad, Mikey last night made them look good. They seemed to stop his progress therefore awarding Spence the 'Ring generalship' category. Legitimate punch for punch though I think Spence still clearly won the fight. Probably closer than it looked. Mikey was too cagey.

"The four criteria judges use are:

    • Effective Aggression The fighter who is bullying and backing up his opponent, coming forward unimpeded and landing punches are the hallmarks of effective aggression.
    • Defence strictly speaking how a fighter blocks, slips, parries and catches their opponents punches equates to proper defence.
    • Ring Generalship The fighter that is controlling the pace of the fight, managing distance and controlling the tempo of the action is the ring general!
    • Clean Punches Landed A punch either lands on a legal target or it does not. Precision is key in our final criteria - clean punches landed.
Being able to understand what constitutes effective aggression, who is truly dictating the action in a fight, which fighter is executing their offence while avoiding the attack of their foe and who is scoring more cleanly is integral to scoring a fight accurately.

The casual fan and die-hard alike can learn how to watch fights and score them objectively leading to better understanding the sport they love and an appreciation for the strategy and tactics of the athletes."

Yeah that's great, and? Its a balance, sometimes a fighter is effectively doing 2 of those things, while other is doing the other two, how do you split them? Or they're trading off 3 for 3, while both leaving out 1, how do you split them?

This^^ lennox also said during the broad cast he loved Spences jab because it frustrates the opponent, disrupts their rhythm and gets them focused on the jab which opens them up for other shots.

While scoring you just have to consider all of the criteria. However punches landed are the most important one of course.

That one is paramount on my list. Ring generalship while I count it, it's dead last.

You dont score a fight just by counting punches. If you are jabbing you opponents forearms and controlling his movement, and what he can/cannot do, then that's ring generalship.

You can agree with it or not, but that's a pretty good answer actually.

Even if you decide a round by the punches landed, you dont score punches.

I don't think so, but it does break the arm down though.

It’s called tenderizing the steak before you turn up the heat.

Technically I understand what you're trying to say, but it sounds wrong with the way you're saying it.

Yes the overall fight is almost all decided on rounds won (points deductions and KD's etc see that it is not completely on this), but how do you score a round? Obviously by punches landed. You can't win a round without landing punches. So when it comes down to the bare bones, yes it is still scored on punches landed, obviously. Hence there is of course, such a thing as a scoring punch

No It's not. Clean punches are head and body shots. :chuck:
