Has going to 12 round fights drastically changed boxing? Is that the reason for heavier heavyweights? Training for 12 rounds would def require less stamina allowing fighters to put on more weight. You def get less for your money when ordering a fight. I for one would love to go back to a championship rounds setting although would never happen. Thoughts?

I would agree. I think it also makes fights less tactical.

I get people are worried about brain damage, but you can get serious brain damage from 10 rounds. I think the solution is more medical checks, stopping one sided beatings, and encouraging corners to throw in the towel when their fighter is in trouble, or is repeatedly stunned.

I was thinking if 20 rounds could be done pretty safely the other day. Maybe have both fighters getting manditory checks before something like every 2 rounds, after the 10th. The downside is it could slow down fights.

Is anyone in favor of returning to 20 rounds?

20 rounds would never happen but I would 100% support bringing back 15.

To be honest it doesnt really matter and i dont really care.
Fighters are just going to pace themselves more and start slower if you add another 3 rounds.
Theyre already training as hard as they can, if they brought 15 rounders back then any fighter who would suddenly show up in better shape than he was previously in for a 12 round championship fight is lazy and was not fighting to his full potential to begin with, would have lost because of it and wouldnt be in the elite bracket anyway.

Besides, 3 extra rounds just means 3 extra rounds were a fighter who is near the breaking point physically, gets a minute to recover just to go back out and take a beating that he should no longer be taking.

The talk about "15 round fights that would have gone differently if they had been 12 rounders like louis vs conn" is rubbish because if it had been a 12 rounder the pacing would have been faster and louis would have stepped on the gas earlier, knowing he only has 12 rounds and nothing would have changed, same thing just slightly sped up. And if it was a 20 rounder Conn probably would have made it to the 16th or 17th round, doesnt change anything really

15 rounds are the championship rounds. 10 to 12 is just ridiculous. 2 extra rounds isn't enough to separate a regular bout from a championship bout.

Doing away with the 15 round limit helped to *******ize boxing. It made guys like Oscar de la Hoya happy I bet.

I really don't see how some of these over sized oafs would ever be around for the bell in a 15 round fight. Can you see Joshua in a fast paced fight going 15?

I would love a return to 15 rounds for championship fights but in this day of ESPN highlight ADD we might lose the casual fan who in his heart prefers 4 round Butterbean donnybrooks.

15 rounds used to separate the men from the boys and it would also mean less 6-6 draws:eek:

It would def force those in the HW division to condition themselves better. These guys are absolutely gassed by the 7 th round. It’s crazy these are supposed to be the best guys and they look like they’re running on 50-60 pct capacity. Lesser weight classes don’t have the conditioning problem like the HW but would love to see the little guys scrap for longer they def can handle it. The sport isn’t dying popular fights are still a draw but I think you’d get more casuals watching if they got more for their money

I too prefer 15 round fights as it gives us a better, more tangible connection with our collective past in the sport.

That said, if anyone of the powers-that-be could come forward with any results from a definitive study of how the extra three rounds adversely affects fighters, I'd totally be in favor of shortening the distance to 12. Absolutely. There could very well be some validity to the idea that three fewer rounds is just that fewer blows to take to the head, and therefore logically must be a sound idea. Maybe it is, I don't know.

Do a case study; how many ring deaths on a two, three, and five year rolling average are we seeing now? Then, how many did we see in those same rolling averages during the years of 15-round fights? To further explore things, which rounds were we seeing these things happen? In other words, what percentage of ring deaths occurred in rounds 13-15? Do the numbers bear out the assumption that fewer rounds mean fewer tragedies?

I have to believe something like that has already been done, but this IS boxing, after all.

I would oppose bringing it back, even though I think that it would make the sport better.

Fighters safety must be the top priority.
