I can see that this needs clarification.

Moorer, Old Foreman, and Briggs, were not among the very best fighters of the era.

You might have expected that the lineal title would always have been in the hands of either Tyson, Holyfield, Bowe, or Lewis, just as it was always in the hands of Ali, Frazier or Foreman, in the early 70s.

However I am equally adamant that their title claims were legitimate.

Sometimes a fighter who is not the best of the day wins the lineal title, and these are such cases.

I think Moorer and Foreman deserve to be considered among the best fighters of that era, as does Douglas in 1990 of course.

I remember when Briggs fought Lewis.
There was absolutely no mention of the lineal title when Briggs was introduced. If a fighter can't even be bothered to claim it, then I can't call him a champion either.
In Briggs's case he really had no right to claim it anyway, such was the blatant injustice of the decision in the Foreman fight.

after that he'd have more issues with the reign than dempsey did, maybe gibbons would be favored. Tunney does the same thing to a sated, bloated toney that he did to dempsey who was only sated.

Fulton might derail him before he even gets a title shot.

That is why I am not a fan of predicting that footnotes would match the career accomplishments of greats.

There are just so many places for them to come unstuck.

I agree with the second bit too, but i do think toney would beat willard in a longer fight and get beaten by tunney in similar fashion to dempsey.

 

If toneys career happened before fast food was a thing he might have been the greatest ever
