I've gone full circle on him. He clearly loves boxing or he wouldn't keep coming back for more ridicule and punishment. You have to give him credit for getting in their with Haye & Price. I so wanted to believe in him. I would have been chuffed for him if he did win a version of the world title. Unfortunatley he didn't cut it as a pro, and that's a shame. He's a great personality, and he did a lot for British boxing. I hope he retires, admits he wasn't good enough & moves on. :good
A big mouth who literally took a few mil from the fans. At least he tried but one thing is for sure, Pricey hits incredibly hard.
I don't know if he deserves respect, other than the basic respect you give to anyone willing to step in the ring. He did very well financially out of a very limited skill and mind set. That deserves some praise, I think. But, there are guys like Sprott, who are still fighting, who never got the big paydays and have achieved a lot more in their careers. They deserve real respect. Audley, once he turned pro, was a coddled, spoilt and childish man who burned all of his bridges.
i feel for Audley Harrison, mentally i think he is really ****ed up and weak. He has all the attributes to be a top top heavyweight but wasnt mentally right, hopefully now he will retire and chill out. he has made a good amount of money so doesnt need to carry on for that reason, i just hope all the **** about fulfilling his destiny and all that doesnt start again in a few months.
Through the highs and lows, his determination has been nothing but inspiration. It was Audley Harrison who entered into the boxing gym at 19 years of age, it was Audley Harrison who had all those amateur fights and against all the odds, captured the Olympic Gold Medal! The first boxing Olympic Gold medal for 32 years. All at the same time while studying for a degree in Sports Science & Business Management. Over 22 years ago, Audley Harrison was just a statistic, no matter what talented he had...? nobody can deny that he did not aim high in life, and for me as a fan he has learnt me many lessons, and i see him as a reference point. His professional career may not have been the best but he did have some achievements, maybe his expectations where to big that he put on himself. I respected the fact that Audley Harrison aimed high in life, and if you fall just such of some of your goals..? you have still gotten a pretty long way, not many people have this outlook in life so they don't even aim high in the first place. Audley Harrison has not achieved all his goals inside the ring, but maybe you can say..? he did achieve his most important goal, and that was to become Olympic Champion. And that was to secure the future for all Team GB boxers. It was Audley Harrison who campaigned for the sport of boxing at amateur level as a Olympic sport to be funded, that was Audley Harrison's legacy........ The Olympic Gold Medal! That changed British Boxing for ever! Built out of the determination and a dream, from just a statistic! From just a another black school drop-out, from just another guy one of 1000's that may walk into a boxing gym! every-week! Maybe that was his destiny, to become the Olympic Champion! Maybe that was the rise and fall of the mythical A-Force. I can remember as a kid, getting up at 3-4 in the morning. To watch Audley Harrison win his Olympic Gold Medal, and there was no debate he won it out right. For me he was are real last Super-heavyweight Olympic Champion. Because Anthony Joshua, was gifted his win with some of the worst judging in Olympic Boxing history.
I be honest, people will laugh and dig me out but i think Audley suffers from a form of mental illness. My brother does so i don't say it lightly and i just think Audley's had so much go on in his life i do wonder if he really recovered from the loss of his brother. Just the way he behaves i do wonder, the delusional stuff and his general behavior at times. I do find it strange... He's done great to become a Olympic and European Champion as a professional. Good luck to him on his future endeavors. He's made so many mistakes, but he's accepted those wrongs. And last night he tried to fight, he tried to land but was outsized, outstrengthed and outskilled by a good fighter at peak of powers. All the best to him, i hope he finds happiness and has a safe retirement and enjoys time with his family.
if he admitted he was not good enough, but he did try, then ok fair enough to him, it is the way he always thought, he was just having to turn up and was going to win the world title with ease, and in his book, how even before he had his first pro fight talking about where he would rank in the ATG list, he though about top 5 probably top 3 , or some sort of rubbish like this,
I have a feeling he will comeback and settle this thing with Price once and for all. Anyone can get blown out like that in heavyweight boxing. Price got lucky. Simple as that.
Thank Niko the world's oldest profession is still thriving, regardless of gender, creed, nationality or sexuality.
Probably Harrison came to the professional game to late. The Olympic Gold has been something of albatross around his neck. It got him a a high profile contract with the BBC which created an expectation we were going to see the next Lennox Lewis. Has there been a bigger fall from grace by a British sportsman in recent years?
I agree 100% with the above he kidded a couple of million out of the BBC and us boxing fans . He thought he was bigger than the sport itself when he turned pro self managed self promoted thinking he knew it all One of the biggest underachievers to win a gold medal if not the biggest of all time.
