Whats the whole thing with 'Respected columnist Dan Rafael'?

Every time you hear his name mentioned it is in that context, is it a pisstake, are they his first names? What?

Then he shouldn't be respected. Only an idiot could have thought Jones would win on the basis of his last 6 fights going back 4 years.

respected coumnist dan rafael apparently does not know that HBO insisted on the fight being in america , instead of in the uk where it would have sold out .

A lot of people were picking Jones. Remember after the Hopkins fight Calzaghe looked pretty shot himself.

Because that's how you have to address him on this board. Just like when you talk about Emmanuel Steward, you have to put "Legendary Trainer" before his name.

Maybe that's your impression, but it certainly wasn't mine. Calzaghe looked pretty shot because he sneaked an SD over one of the best fighters of the past 20 years?? He looked bad that night, but it was blatantly obvious that was because he was facing by far the most skilled and difficult fighter he had ever faced. I think he did very well to maintain his workrate and make the fight so close, and convince the judges he had done enough. Look what happened to Pavlik against Hopkins.

To think Jones could've beaten Calzaghe was stupid.

Rafael is probably one of the many people who have picked against Calzaghe on a regular basis, the fact he has been proved wrong probably stings him a bit.

There are dozens of people on esb who have said boxing is dead/dying in fact people have been saying it for decades. It is rubbish, boxing wont go anywhere.

I do get the feeling that people cant wait for a Calzaghe interview to be posted so they can take every word and twist it into a scheme to fit their own sad agendas. Calzaghe is thick as ****, but he isnt a politician, he wont be running for prime minister, he is a boxer as long as he keep winning and proving 'respected' writers like Dan Rafael wrong then he is doing the right thing.

"The undercard of that show, which sold slightly less than 250,000 on pay-per-view, was one of the worst in boxing history for a show so expensive. It’s galling that Calzaghe has the chutzpah to remark that the sport is dying when he took the money and ran the way he did instead of putting on a quality show when he became a promoter and had it within his power to do so...He had the ability to insist on a compelling undercard, but instead chose to line his own pocket rather than make a statement about the way the sport should be run."

"Joe Calzaghe is like that drunk uncle who stays too long, talks too much, and just when you think he is going to leave, he is back to annoy you....It is so like this egomaniacal buffoon to think that the sport will not survive without him. Joe, just for the record, the sport was around long before you got here, and it will be around long after you’re gone. That I guarantee. And maybe it will have members who are a bit more grateful and giving to the sport that made them millionaires"

"Trust me Joe; you were diluted long before boxing ever got to you my friend. If anything, boxing gave your life context. Maybe you think staying in a dead division for 10 years, and coming out to fight a bunch of old guys, somehow makes you this big “star” you think you are. It really doesn’t."

" The reason there are so many belts is because MEGA STARS like yourself wouldn’t fight anybody with any real talent during the best part of your career. The super middleweight division had no one of any real talent for years, and when it did, you seemed to not pay attention. How can a star be made when you don’t give anyone with a fighting chance a shot."

"I’m sure Tocker Pudwill, Mger Mkrtchian, and Will McIntyre would have understood if a superstar like yourself would have fought guys like Glen Johnson, and James Toney in their prime. Fighters that Roy Jones and Bernard Hopkins had no fear in facing, while facing each other."

Cant say I disagree, boxing doesn't need it's champions moping around saying nobody deserves to fight me.

On the promoting issue I think we can all agree Oscar has nothing to worry about.

I'm not a huge Rafael fan, but he's right on this one.

Joe Calzaghe epitomizes what's wrong with boxing.
