What Dan Rafael was thinking while he wrote it:

"Calzaghe is a Brit and I just hate how he has beaten every yank we put in front of him. Please retire, so Dawson and others have a chance".

You lot make me laugh. Dan Rafeal has long been singing Calzaghe's praises as a fighter but you conveniently make out he's saying that he doesn't rate him due to his level comp etc. he's been kissing joe's ass for years and recently was saying he should retire after a " glittering career " and with " having nothing left to prove ".
He is slating Joe for the comments he made which may well be out of order but at the end of the day who really gives a **** what Joe thinks ? I don't and i'm a fan of his. You lot who claim to not give a **** about him are up in arms about a statement that really isn't that controversial anyway . Boxing has always had its fighters making controversial comments but cos its calzaghe you can't shut up about it. If i was Joe i'd be pissing myself at all the fuss.

Joe Calzaghe: "Oh yeah? Well at least I can fit through the door."

Distinguished, hmmm... wouldn't say that exactly. If the super middleweight division had "no-one of any real talent" and the light heavies were so much better then how come a fighter who was basically a journeyman at super middle (Johnson) is now mentioned as a top name light heavy?

Wow, another HATE Thread. What do they call them, a 2 minute hate? How intelligent. Let's not discuss whether boxing is dying or not, let's hate on Joe Calzaghe because he beats all our favorite fighters. But I wouldn't expect much else from the OP, he's a known joyboy hater:fire that'll look for any excuse or rumor and regurgitate it like its fact to put down whoever he doesn't like. Quite sad, really.:verysad

I still don't know why joe said it,,,,,he from europe an it is very big over there,,,,now in america it is not as big, so yes it is dying over here....but europe, have sell outs all the time. Williams an palvik are the biggest homegrown stars, an they don't even sell out, juan diaz too.....but think he does........

I see a lot of people calling Rafael a hypocrite because he picked Roy to win. However, I want someone to point out to me where he criticised Joe for taking an easy fight. His criticism was that the fight was poorly promoted poorly and did terrible numbers. Him picking Roy in no way makes him a hypocrite given his criticism.

What I find really strange about this whole Calzaghe conundrum is his fans. I think it must be bound up with a UK football fan mentality. You see, I am a huge fan of Manny Pacquiao, I count myself as big a fan of his as anyone on here is of Joe Calzaghe. However, if Manny suddenly announced he was to fight Erik Morales or Jose Luis Castillo (ie, someone clearly shot to **** - like Jones Jr), I would be disgusted and would be very vocal about that (and Pac didn't even write in his autobiography that Morales or Castillo was shot as far back as FOUR YEARS ago!!). If when the question was put to him about having a rematch with someone he won a close, unconvincing SD over (in his case JM Marquez, in Joe's it's Hopkins) he said that he and his dad "didn't believe in rematches" when they had already rematched someone (in Pac's case Barrera, in Calzaghe's case the magnificent Mario Veit), I would again be disgusted and would say so. I could go on and on all day about the way Calzaghe handles himself and his career both in the ring and out, but the point is clear: he treats his own fans with contempt, he lies and evades, and yet his fans won't hear a word against him. I have never observed fans of any other fighter behaving in this way en masse the way Calzaghe's do. It's bizarre.

I think it's to do with a siege mentality because his fans read ridiculous criticism leveled at him constantly. Total bollocks like - "he can't punch", "he ducks everyone", "a prime this and a prime that would have KO'd him in 3 rounds", "He is ducking Carl Froch", and not to mention all the idiotic personal insults aimed at him.

All utter baseless shite, which for the dignity of boxing, should be defended.

I consider myself a big fan of his as I love his boxing style, and he seems like a decent bloke. Doesn't mean I agree with everything he says or does, and I certainly wouldn't defend his every action. But some balance would be good.

I respect most boxers, and feel there's a lack of respect towards certain boxers from a lot of people which borders on childish hatred.
