This is terrible news. I knew Joe (JG) had been ill, but I'd hoped he'd beaten the cancer. I'm honoured that Joe took an interest in my writing and my art, and encouraged me. And I also tried to nag him about writing his life story as a proper book...but I don't suppose he had the time or the health to complete that project, which is a real shame and a big loss to us all. My boxing knowledge is small compared to the experts on these forums, and miniscule against Joes. But he still took an interest in me and was such a decent, kind man. He'd even occasionally ask me questions about my own specialist subject (art) and I often got the feeling that he wished he'd have been more creative with his main work instead of focusing on the advertising. He achieved so much with his life. I really wish I could have met him or spoken to him besides the occasional email. This news has hit me. Gonna pour a stiff drink and raise a glass to Joe Rein. Rest in peace, my friend.
This has really saddened me. I don't post a deal on the classic section, but I come on every week or so and read the posts and topics. Everytime I come on, I learn something new, and I love reading JG's posts, as well as Surf Bat's and Burt's. They've forgot more about boxing than what I know. I felt honoured when JG replied back to one of my posts earlier this year. A true gentleman, who'll be greatly missed. I wish I'd have known him personally. R.I.P Joe, Many thanks for your great contribution to this great site. Regards, Loudon.
To the mods, if nobody minds, can you please leave his profile page open? I've just been on and read some old threads that I'd missed, that are fantastic. I'd have given anything to have had a beer with him. What a guy!
Sad, I know what his family is going through right now since I also lost family members. He made the classic section of this site a treasure and his knowledge is invaluable. We pray for you.
He initiated PMs with each of my handles here. I treasure our PM correspondence, and he expressed deepest gratitude for my expressions of appreciation and respect in various posts. I wanted him to share LaMotta's longevity, but I'm grateful he fully knew and acknowledged the full esteem in which so many of us held him in highest regard. There's always going to be much I wished to have exchanged with him, but I'll be forever grateful for the interactions we did enjoy. Joe Rein was a perfect piece of class, and deserves to be enshrined in Canastota for that alone. My thoughts tonight will be of how he exemplified gentlemanship for the rest of us to learn and carry forward. No ten count for JG. Henry Hascup is right to stop the toll at nine. It can't be the same without him though.
Very sad news. He told me back in April that he was finished, but it's still a shock, even though I never met him other than through his posts and PMs. He was a very gentlemanly poster and had a wealth of knowledge and lore. Baruḥ Dayan HaEmet
I never knew they were the same man. I always enjoyed his posts he was a classy gentleman ,and very knowledgeable on boxing. RIP
Great idea. Damn shame to hear about this. JG had some great stories and always took the time to answer questions.
I had no idea he was sick, feel absolutely terrible that he has passed away. He was always the poster i respected the most and never saw him being disrespectful towards anyone. RIP JG you will be sorely missed.
