Thank you for defending your B buddy's honor. Trying to insult a man who has an opinion about an underacheving fighter because you dont agree with him says alot about you. Get out of your feelings.
He had opportunities, but: a) they came at a fairly advanced age, courtesy of Universum, his first promoters, who wasted some of his best years (they are doing the same with their current stable of fighters IMHO). Let's see what Canelo's desire is like at 37+ years. b) when Golovkin was younger, he had that desire - he clearly wanted the Sturm, Zbik, Quillin etc. fights, and signed to fight Pirog who was considered about the most dangerous man in the division. c) there are still plenty of others who had better opportunities than him. Let me give an example: Sebastian Zbik, who in 2011 got the lucrative JCC Jr fight and even after losing that got another chance vs Sturm. If GGG were German I guarantee he would have had much better opportunities. If you read my post carefully, I said "ability" not "greatness" or "legacy". There is a difference, e.g. many think Vitali Klitschko is a better heavyweight h2h than his brother, but few dispute than Wlad is the greater and has the better legacy. OK, Canelo's delay of the Golovkin fight to "acclimatize" to 160 is very long debated, so let's start with the following avoiders: 1) Do you agree Sturm ducked Golovkin? 2) Geale ducked Golovkin and got stripped. They fought later once Geale had already lost and was out of options, obviously GGG gets less credit than if he had beaten an undefeated Geale. 3) N'Dam got himself into a mandatory position but he / his management didn't want the fight, probably due to his shaky chin. 4) Peter Quillin: asked a ridiculous amount, pricing himself out. He also ducked Korobov for what it's worth. 5) Darren Barker: Gennady made an offer to fight him for free, but Barker himself admitted he didn't want the fight. He fought Sturm instead to be fair, but there's no doubt the problem was Gennady was higher risk / lower reward. 6) Billy Joe Saunders - said multiple times that he didn't want the GGG fight and asked for a huge purse. Gennady was pretty unlucky not to get to fight Pirog (although who knows for sure who would have won that one), or an old Martinez. No one to blame there, but still unlucky for GGG. You need to understand that GGG is really from a generation before Canelo, as seen from the list above. The list is not an impressive one to be honest, and basically all would have lost by KO, but had Gennady got these fights at the right time he would have been undisputed for a while and looked greater, at least on paper. Once GGG got Canelo money he had the ability to get much better fights if he wanted them, but pretty much lost interest, like I have been saying for a while. That isn't to his credit, but that shouldn't affect the truth of what happened earlier to him.
There's no point in giving someone an opportunity you know they are not going to take...or unable to take...
