Why is it so common among the main characters and greatest fighters of their generations to put a pause on their careers?

Robinson was on leave for three years.

Ali was out of commission for three years.

Leonard had so many retirements that it was nearly embarrassing for the sport to have their poster boy go missing that often.

Mayweather was on leave for a little under two years.

After Dempsey became the first Ring Magazine HW Champ, he routinely fought once a year and took 3 years off before fighting Tunney. George Foreman took 10 years off. Boxing takes a toll mentally and physically. Given that it isn't a team sport, and given that there is no season, taking time off isn't always a bad idea.

    boxing is tough

Its probably good for your health to be honest, hands can heal, injurys that come and go will have time to clear up. It will be alot harder fighting at the top level than most people realise... constantly getting your body into such prime condition will take its toll in the long run

Lots of tennis players get bad knees and have to take breaks from the running they do.. Also joints will wear from the constant explosive actions

They use what's between their ears and realize the demand to see them will be even greater after the sport misses them for a year or two.

In this case, Mike Tyson is just a G
